Dear Professor Hanson,

Evidently you are a supporter of Donald Trump. If I read your essay on this subject correctly, you seem to be implying that, unlike the false elitism of the Washington Beltway, Hollywood, and Silicon Valley, we should look to the real basis of brilliance and repute in a “demonstrable record of moral and intellectual excellence.”

Do you seriously mean to say that Donald Trump’s life has such a “demonstrable record”? A man who cavalierly treats women as objects for his sexual pleasure and lies at the drop of a hat we are to believe is a man of high moral character? Or one who has trouble constructing a sentence using a vocabulary of more than 100 words (everything is just “fantastic”) demonstrates intellectual excellence?

The problem with Trump is not so much his policies, about which reasonable people may disagree, but his character flaws. As David Brook recently commented, Trump is “ripe to be played” by foreign leaders like Putin who are smarter and more wily than he is. But Trump has such a fragile ego that he is likely to react to being played in his typically childish, immature way by lashing out at everyone and anyone he thinks is disrespecting him. He never takes responsibility for anything, always blaming others for his own mistakes, and he does not know how to accept and deal with criticism in a rational way. He also suffers from what, as you classicists know, the Greeks called hubris. And you know what hubris leads to: tragedy.

Let’s just hope that the tragedy ends up being his personally and not ours collectively. With such a man having access to the nuclear trigger, we should all be hoping that we somehow manage to survive these next four years without a tragedy of monumental proportions.

Dear Angry Reader Sanford Thatcher,

There is no need to attach your biography in our new age of populism; the persuasiveness of your argument should stand or fall by what you have written rather than the authority of your CV.

As you know, I certainly did not equate Trump with proof of non-elite moral excellence; rather I explained his election through the widespread anger at political and media elites that was aired through his populist candidacy.

I voted for Donald Trump when there was a binary between his agenda and that of Hillary Clinton.

There is some truth in what you have written about Trump’s rhetorical crudity and his past behavior, but, of course, the Clintons were a virtual crime syndicate—she using her office to leverage cash for the Foundation (a sinecure for unemployable Team Clinton politicos between campaigns) and Bill’s speaking career. Of course, when she lost and is now permanently out of federal office, she can do no connivers any good and so the money dried up and the Foundation is reeling—proof of sorts that the entire operation was a pay-for-play enterprise of the sort that earns most people an indictment.

Actually hubris is a result of Koros (instability and excess resulting from power and wealth) that leads to leads to Hubris (overweening arrogance) to Ate (madness and self-inflicted destruction) and ends in Nemesis (divine and fated retribution), which is all the stuff of tragedy, given that the sequence is usually associated initially with people of talent and good intentions.

All this may certainly apply to Trump’s earlier business implosions, and it fits Bill Clinton perfectly, and Obama may end up the same way.

My point is that in 2016 the choice was not between two characters as much as two agendas: I preferred a foreign policy of deterrence backed by military strength as a better way of preventing wars and interventions, an end to doubling the debt, zero interest rates, and record low GDP growth, a stop to illegal immigration and racial polarization, a restoration of the health care system, and efforts at tax and regulatory reform to restart the economy, as well as renewed energy production—all as a mechanism to help the so-called forgotten man, the middle classes who were the losers under globalization.

I saw far greater hope that Trump might enact such an agenda, and no hope that Hillary Clinton would.

As far as character flaws, pick your poison. His I thought were mostly rhetorical (as you note with your unease about his limited vocabulary) and in the private sphere; hers were concrete and at the public expense, from her cattle futures fraud, to her Wikileaks scandals to the Clinton foundation criminality to her callousness and lying about Benghazi. Hillary as you know is a serial liar, from the mundane (her landing in the Balkans under sniper fire) to the existential (lying to the families of the Benghazi dead).

You might have noted that we survived Bill Clinton committing sex acts in the Oval Office bathroom with a subordinate intern less than half his age (the sort of thing that gets a professor fired summarily), and then lying about it under oath, resulting in his disbarment—the sort of crudity I think you are implying disqualifies one for high office?

Obama, remember, tapped the communications of AP reporters, monitored the communications of James Rosen of Fox News, droned US citizens, bombed Libya without congressional approval, granted amnesties of the sort that he had once warned were unconstitutional, lied about the ACA, and simply chose not to enforce various federal laws he found at odds with his progressive agenda.

If you are arguing that Trump is a Frankenstein monster, then the Dr. Frankenstein creator is surely Barack Obama whose executive orders, partisan rhetoric, nullification of federal laws, and abject ruination of the Democratic Party at the state, congressional, and presidential level all empowered Trump.

So far job growth and the stock market are up; Trump’s appointments in the national security sphere are centrist and heralded. His selections from the business and military fields are a welcome change from the tired retreads from academia and government. And his illegal immigration initiatives and energy agendas are overdue.

As far as hubris, self-reflect: in the last 90 days liberal commentators and pundits have variously called for Trump’s murder, his immediate removal for health reasons, his impeachment, and his resignation.

His phone calls to foreign leaders and communications have been illegally tapped (and so note that the media is now backing away from their Russian collusion charges that proved so far groundless, as they worry more that intelligence agencies’ tapping and the leaking may be exposed as the felonious acts they were); his wife has been accused falsely of prostitution and immigration fraud. Trump himself has been falsely accused (in print) of urophilia and suffering from neurosyphilis.

One New York Times columnist has begged the IRS to commit a felony and send him the Trump tax returns; another compared his election to the mass deaths of Pearl Harbor and 9/11. Is not all that indicative of classical madness that will surely lead to an accounting? Trump, the supposed buffoon, polls higher in the public’s estimation of veracity than does the highbrow media).

On the larger topic of the “elite,” I think we could say that those in Bakersfield or Des Moines did not give us record debt, serial corruption in the IRS, VA, GSA, or EPA, and a world in free fall abroad. Here in California the best and brightest managed to deliver the highest basket of income, sales, and gas taxes in the nation resulting in infrastructure and schools rated near the very bottom in state-to-state comparisons. The Orville dam is a metaphor of elite indifference to existential problems while it pursued transgendered restrooms and bobcat health.

In this commentary, you appear to be engaging in sophistry. In other words, you appear to be decisively imparting falsehoods. First you fabricate a definition of the “American elite” comprised exclusively of progressives. Then you fabricate a reality where the mainstream press disseminates lies, where college campuses lack diversity and muzzle free speech and where progressives have fallen down in addressing the problems of the inner cities. Finally you fabricate an argument that the so-called elite have “titles, brands and buzz” but no “demonstrable knowledge or proven character”. This is a perfect example of deflection and psychological projection. You have, wittingly or not, described your populist hero Donald Trump, a man with “brands and buzz”, who disseminates lies, impugns minorities, muzzles the press, cares little about the inner cities and clearly lacks knowledge or character.

One of the themes of the Angry Reader column is the predictable use by Leftists such as yourself of personal invective (“sophistry”, “falsehoods”, “fabricate”, etc.) along with intellectual laziness.

Take your allegation that I wrote that elites are “comprised exclusively of progressives”.

How does that assertion square with my allusion in the column on elites to “many in the Republican Party as well” or to the “Bush or Clinton families”. Are the Bushes and the Republican Party progressives?

So it is hard to take you seriously when the first allegation you make is demonstrably false.

And it sadly it is all downhill from there:

1) Are you arguing for intellectual diversity on campus? I think the recent Middlebury and Berkeley violence highlights my suggestion that there is little intellectual tolerance on campus.

2) Are you suggesting that the media is not progressive? JournoList, Wikileaks, and the epidemic of fake news from Rathergate and Brian Williams to the MLK bust allegation or Trump’s supposed romps in a Moscow hotel room substantiate the unreliability of the press, which by all polls and its own admission is overwhelming liberal.

3) You doubt the nature of life in the inner city or its governance? The inner cities are in crisis; most have had Democratic mayors and councils for the last thirty years and more; again are you contending that fact?

Donald Trump is not “my populist hero”; can you find any indication that I wrote that?

More to the point: what Trump says and what he actually does are two different things. I will find him guilty of “muzzling the press” when his Justice Department hounds journalists of the Associated Press or taps the communications of a reporter in the fashion of Obama’s treatment of James Rosen, or expands the reach of the NSA and the dissemination of its intelligence or depends on fawning press coverage to advance his agenda in the fashion of the “god”, “smartest president ever” and leg-tingling Barack Obama.

There are various ways of defining knowledge and character.

Trump is, of course, a flawed individual like many of us; but his failings are transparent, quite unlike those of Barack Obama, to take one example (Hillary Clinton is another).

With Trump, what you see is what you get. With Obama and his subordinates we were given constant utopian platitudes about hope and change, but experienced quite different dangerous deeds: expansions of NSA electronic surveillance, lying under oath by Eric Holder and James Clapper, the warping of the IRS, scandals in the VA, GSA, Secret Service, EPA, etc., nullifications of federal law by executive order non-enforcement, the jailing of a video maker on the false narrative of culpability for Benghazi (about which lies were promulgated by Susan Rice), the “echo chamber” manipulation of the “know nothing” press, assassinations abroad of US citizens, bombing Libya without congressional consent, the likely illegal monitoring and leaking of communications of the Trump campaign (as reported by the NY Times, Washington Post, and BBC), constant mellifluous untruth (you can keep your doctor and health plan, the president will not by fiat grant amnesties, the mythologies of the Cairo Speech), and often bizarre references to foreign leaders (from the open mic promise to be more flexible with Putin but only after the election to the gratuitous insults of Netanyahu [“coward”, “chickenshit”]). I learned in farming early on that the loud and uncouth are easier to deal with than the glib and shifty-eyed; the former may assault you senses, but the latter your person and livelihood.

So I think you need to redefine the boundaries of wisdom; they are not just calibrated by “57 states”- and “corps-men”-like Columbia and Harvard degrees.

Surviving the Manhattan real estate cauldron may take more savvy and cunning than the sorts of identity-politics navigation in colleges and liberal circles as outlined in Dreams From My Father. I have spent most of my adult life in two pursuits: academia, often in the circle of those with impressive graduate degrees, and farming with those sometimes without high school diplomas.

I saw little difference among the two groups in terms of ethics, saw the less articulate often more direct and transparent, and could never quite tell which group was the smarter, although what I heard in the faculty lounge and academic senate was a few rings down on the intelligence scale from what I heard and saw when talking to well drillers, pump installers, and tractor mechanics.

For 8 years Obama failed to condemn the genocide perpetrated by Al Q’ieda, ISIS, and members of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) who continued to butcher over 200,000 Syrian and Assyrian Christians. Current media reports state Obama is trying to salvage, what he calls, “His Legacy.” Obama will never be able to salvage “His Legacy”, because he turned a blind eye to the genocide that Al Q’ieda, ISIS Radical Islamic Terrorist, and members of the MB perpetrated against Syrian and Assyrian Christians. Obama repeatedly ignored pleas by 56 US Congressmen, on both sides of the isle, to provide Christians families with small arms weapons to protect themselves.

Al Q’ idea, ISIS, and the MB crucified Christians, beheaded them, burned them alive, drowned them in cages, buried them alive, cut small children’s bodies in two, forced men to kneel in order to shoot them behind the head, and threw Christians from high buildings to their deaths. In the last 2 years, ISIS has perpetrated 143 “Radical Islamic Terrorists” attacks in 29 countries, murdering 2043 people in “Hate Crimes” and “Crimes Against Humanity”; those murderous acts were executed to prevent Christians from exercising their “Freedom of Religion.”

While Obama was ignoring the genocide in the Middle East, he minimized the 93 “Radica Islamic Terrorist” attacks in the United States (2/3rd of those attacks occurred in the last 4 years). Yet for 8 years, Obama refused to allow personnel in the White House, the National Security Agency, the CIA, the FBI, Department of Defense, the Justice Department, 17 Intelligence Agencies, the US Armed Forces, and the State Department to properly identify terrorists killing Americans, as “Radical Islamic Terrorists” nor did he allow Government Agencies to associate ISIS, MB, MB Front Groups, or Al Q’ieda with Islam.

House Speaker Paul Ryan called President Obama’s failure to protect persecuted Christians “abysmal.” He said Obama has had a distinct disinterest in including “Religious Freedom” and the “Genocide of Christians”, among his foreign policy priorities. Obama even left the State Department’s Office of International Religious Freedom vacant for nearly two years.

On September 30th, the New York Times reported on a leaked recording of Secretary of State John Kerry conversing with leaders of the Syrian opposition fighting Syria’s President, Bashar Assad. It cast light on Obama’s “Laisez Faire” attitude toward ISIS, and his continued minimization of the strength of the ISIS, which he referred to as a “JV Team”.

In 2012, Kerry indicated that Obama believed that allowing ISIS to grow in strength and receive weapons delivered from Libya would serve his objective of helping oust Syria’s President, Bashar Assad, without the need to employ US Military combat personnel on the ground. WikiLeaks E-mails back up Turkish President Erdogen’s assertion that the US has given support to terror groups, including ISIS in Syria.

In 2008, Obama said the reason he ignored the Pentagon, the State Department, and the Intelligence community, and pulled all US Military forces out of Iraq, was because there wasn’t a Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq. Today there are nearly 5000 US Military combat personnel on the ground in Iraq, and hundreds of US Military combat personnel in Syria, and still there is no Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq (2 US Military combat personnel have been killed, and 14 were wounded in Syria in October).

According to the New York Times report on Kerry’s conversation with Assad’s Syrian opposition, Obama did not calculate that Assad would turn to Russia for military support, making ISIS’ opposition to his regime irrelevant. During the period when Obama was hoping ISIS would oppose Assad, ISIS genocide against Christians increased; Obama turned a blind eye to ISIS’ genocide and the rapid growth of ISIS from several thousand terrorists, to an multi-national trained force of over 50,000 “Radical Islamic Terrorists”.

Obama tried to minimize and ignore the growth in strength of what he called the ISIS “JV Team”. Obama’s continued minimization of ISIS resulted in 50 frustrated Central Command Intelligence Analyst co-signing a letter, protesting the fact that they were being pressured by Generals to produce intelligence reports that underestimate the true strength of ISIS and the danger ISIS’ Islamic State posed in the Middle East. Those Generals were, being pressured by their superiors in the Pentagon, to go along with Obama’s underestimated strength of ISIS.

In the last 8 years, while Obama occupied the Oval Office, ISIS easily grew rapidly because there were no longer a US Military force in Iraq, and it spread its tentacles into 29 countries, perpetrating over 8986 murders worldwide (1123/year), as well as the genocide of 200,000 Syrian and Assyrian Christians. In the previous 27 years Radical Islamic Terrorist murdered 4278 people worldwide (158/year).

In a 2013 Congressional hearings, evidence was presented from DIA intelligence reports that from 2011-2012, US Libyan Ambassador Christopher Stevens was shipping weapons from deposed Libyan Ruler, Muammar Gaddafi’s armory. Tons of weapons were being shipped from the port of Benghazi to Syria via Turkish ports, then on to the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Q’ieda, and ISIS Radical Islamic Terrorists, who were opposing Bashar Assad.

It was another of Obama’s “Gun Running Operations”, following the “Fast and Furious Gun Running Operation” to Mexican Drug Cartels, that resulted in the death of a US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

An April 22, 2014 report entitled, “How America Changed Sides in the War On Terror”, identified Hakim Belhaj, as a key Al Q’ieda operative, was known Libyan terrorist who the European Union banned, and who was identified as the principal organizer of the Radical Islamic Terrorist attack on the US Mission in Benghazi on September 11, 2011, played a major role in moving Gaddafi’s weapons from US Ambassador Chris Stevens to the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Q’ieda, and ISIS in Syria.

The below listed comments and acts by Obama, reveals his state of mind, and why for 8 years, he refused to properly identify the terrorists killing Americans as “Radical Islamic Terrorists”, why he referred to ISIS as a “JV Team”, and why he refused to authorized the bombing of the Islamic State’s Capital of Raqqa (the Joint Chiefs recommended the strike, in order to decapitate the Islamic State’s leadership):

1) On ABC News Obama referenced—“My Muslim Faith.”

2) Obama wrote that in the event of a conflict—“I will stand with the Muslims.”

3) Obama refused to label the Ft Hood shooter who yelled “Allah Akbar” while he was killing 13 US soldiers as a “Terrorist.”

4) Obama provided $100 million of US Taxpayer dollars thru Hillary’s State Department to build “foreign” Mosques.

5) Obama exempted Muslims in the US from fines that Christians and Jews were forced to pay for, for not signing up for Obamacare.

6) Obama appointed members of the Muslim Brotherhood and its Front Groups to NSA, DHS, CIA, DOD, STATE, & Justice.

7) Obama refused to join world leaders in Paris after the Paris massacres, to show US solidarity against “Radical Islamic Terrorists”.

8) Obama ordered Georgetown and Notre Dame to cover up all vestiges of Christianity before he would agree to speak there.

9) Obama freed 195 of the 240 most dangerous detainees in GITMO; 30% returned to combat and are killing US Military personnel.

10) Obama terminated the military tribunals established to put captured “Radical Islamic Terrorists” on trial in GITMO.

11) Obama assured Egypt’s Foreign Minister that—“I am a Muslim.”

12) Obama was the first US President in 240 years who refused to send a Christmas greeting from the White House.

13) Obama had Dept. ED install mandatory Arabic language, and Muslim Religious studies in the nation’s grammar schools.

14) Obama said NASA’s “Foremost Mission” would be to develop an outreach to Muslim communities.

15) In an Islamic Dinner with Muslims, Obama said—“I am one of you.”

16) Obama followed the Muslim custom of not wearing any jewelry (rings/watches) for 8 years during Ramadan.

17) Obama said the Muslim call to worship is “The most beautiful sound on earth.”

18) For 8 years, in the Executive Office Building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, DC, silence was enforced during the five times of
Islamic prayer each day (25 minutes/day, 7 days/week). Prayer rugs and crescent moon symbols were made available in several
areas of the Executive Office Building for Muslims visitors and Muslims working in The White House.

Millions of unprotected Assyrian Christians living in their ancient ancestral homeland of Mesopotamia, on the Plains of Nineveh, and Syrian Christians living in Syria who have practiced their religion since Christ walked the surface of the earth, were butchered by Al Q’ieda, ISIS, and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, while Obama ignored their repeated requests for small arms for the self-defense of their families.

Despite the repeated petitions by 56 US Congressmen from both sides of the isle, who pleaded with Obama to provide Syrian and Assyrian Christians with self-defensive small arms weapons, to protect their families from the on-going genocide by ISIS, Obama refused to authorize self-defensive aid. At the same time, Obama was accepting over 900,000 Middle East Muslim refugees, he refused to accept any of the over 300,000 Middle East Christians Refugees who fled from the genocide by “Radical Islamic Terrorist”.

The US Congress must terminate all funding for the UN Middle East and African “Muslin Only” Refugee Program, run by Muslims in the UN—it has been discriminating against Christian Refugees for the last 8 years, and is an ongoing violation of “Freedom of Religion” and US Law.

While the genocide of Christians in the Middle East continued, Obama brought in over 900,000 Middle East and African Muslin Refugees into the US, thru the UN Refugee Relief Program. They were settled in 187 cities throughout the US, at a cost of billions of US tax payer dollars, while Obama prevented the FBI from determining if they had terrorist ties. Obama refused to inform local and state elected government officials, and Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement Officers where those Middle East and African Muslim Refugees were resettled.

For 8 years, the “Republican” and “Democratic” leaders in Congress, worked closely with Obama and the US Chamber of Commerce to ensure the wide open Southern Border remained open. For those 8 years “Radical Islamic Terrorists”. who have set up terrorist training camps just south of the US/Mexican border, were able to simply walk into the United States thru that wide open southern border.

The FBI has opened over 1000 “Radical Islamic Terrorist” cases in all 50 states, to apprehend and prosecute “Radical Islamic Terrorist” operating in the United States. To date the FBI has disrupted and prosecuted over 100 “Radical Islamic Terrorist” potential attacks within the United States, resulting in the arrests and prosecutions of 180 “Radical Islamic Terrorists.”

Despite the 180 arrests, there have been 93 ISIS Radical Islamic Terrorist attacks within the United States by Muslim Refugees from the Middle East and Africa and/or from their off springs; 2/3rd of those attacks occurred in the last 4 years. Those attacks and threats of attacks have been covered up by the left of center liberal media establishment working very closely with the Muslim Brotherhood, the Muslim Brotherhood Front Groups, and the Obama administration. The attachment details many, but not all of those “Radical Islamic Terrorist” attacks initiated in the United States, that resulted in the death of hundreds of Americans Citizens on US soil.

STEP BY STEP: HOW HILLARY, OBAMA INCUBATED ISIS

NEW YORK – By piecing together recently revealed WikiLeaks emails with evidence that has emerged over the past several years, it’s become increasingly clear that President Obama and his secretary of state at the time, Hillary Clinton in 2011, armed the Free Syrian Army rebels in an effort to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad, mirroring a strategy already under way in Libya to help al-Qaida-affiliated militia overthrow Moammar Gadhafi. A consequence of the strategy was the emergence of ISIS out of the loosely coordinated Free Syrian Army coalition as well as the disastrous Benghazi attack in which a U.S. ambassador was murdered.

Various WikiLeaks emails examined by WND indicate the Free Syrian Army was among the first splinter rebel groups Clinton and Obama armed. The Obama administration apparently was hoping to replicate the regime-change strategy in which it armed al-Qaida-affiliated militia in Libya, including Ansar al-Sharia, the group responsible for the Sept. 11, 2012, attack at Benghazi.

The WikiLeaks email evidence shows a shift in policy in which Clinton and Obama appear to have decided in 2011 to topple the governments of Gadhafi in Libya and Assad in Syria, even if it meant arming “Radical Islamic Terrorist” groups that traced back to al-Qaida.

As WND reported last week, WikiLeaks emails back up Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s assertion that U.S.-led coalition forces have given support to terror groups, including ISIS in Syria.

The claim derived further support from a recording leaked to the New York Times of Secretary of State John Kerry admitting the Obama administration not only hoped ISIS would depose the Assad regime, it also gave arms to the jihadist army and its allies to carry out the task.

Hacked emails to Hillary Clinton from longtime adviser Sidney Blumenthal that were published in October by WikiLeaks tell the story.

On June 20, 2011, Blumenthal sent a confidential email to Clinton at the State Department that included an article by David W. Lesch, a professor of Middle Eastern history at Trinity University in San Antonio. Lesch argued a strategy of regime change could be effected in Syria if the U.S. could find opposition groups in Syria capable of establishing “a Benghazi-like refuge from which to launch a rebellion and to which aid can be sent.”

In a subsequent confidential email July 24, 2012, Blumenthal further advised Clinton that the “growing success of the rebel forces of the Free Syria Army” caused him to believe the Assad regime was increasingly vulnerable to being toppled.

In an email Feb. 24, 2012, Blumenthal characterized the FSA as “loosely organized and uncoordinated,” noting it was “for the most part, local militias, many of them civilian based, that are simply calling themselves the FSA to appear to be part of a whole.”

Blumenthal commented in the email that the armed resistance to Assad “is not well funded or well armed.”

On Feb. 28, 2012, Jacob Sullivan, a State Department senior policy adviser to Secretary Clinton, forwarded to Clinton an opinion piece published in the New York Times by foreign correspondent Roger Cohen suggesting the strategy Obama and Clinton had used to topple Gadhafi in Libya should be used to bring down Assad in Syria.

“As the Bosnian war showed, the basis for any settlement must be a rough equality of forces. So I say step up the efforts, already quietly ongoing, to get weapons to the Free Syrian Army. Train those forces, just as the rebels were trained in Libya,” Cohen wrote. “Payback time has come around: The United States warned Assad about allowing Al Qaeda fighters to transit Syria to Iraq. Now matériel and special forces with the ability to train a ragtag army can transit Iraq – and other neighboring states – into Syria.”

Then, on Sept. 18, 2012, one week after the Benghazi terror attack, Blumenthal, in a confidential memo, alerted Clinton to the possibility of the FSA military taking over Damascus.

The prospect caused Assad’s wife and close relatives to urge Assad to flee Syria to avoid “the fate of Assad’s former ally Muammar al Qaddafi of Libya, who was captured and killed by rebel forces while attempting to flee his home territory in Sirte.”

Clinton sought to arm Free Syrian Army

In an Aug. 17, 2014, email released by WikiLeaks, Clinton, after her service as secretary of state, suggested to adviser John Podesta: “At the same time, we should return to plans to provide the FSA [Free Syrian Army], with some group of moderate forces, with equipment that will allow them to deal with a weakened ISIL, and stepped up operations against the Syrian regime.”

Andrew C. McCarthy, a senior policy fellow at the National Review Institute, tied the statement to the Obama administration’s plan to equip Syrian fighters, either the Free Syrian Army or “other moderate forces,” to a U.S.-led operation in coordination with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey to steer weapons to Syria, “ostensibly to fight both Assad and ISIS.”

McCarthy noted, however, that Clinton’s 2014 memo to Podesta asserted the Saudi and Qatari governments both supported ISIS and other “radical Sunni groups.”

In September 2013, WND reported Secretary of State John Kerry and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., had relied on the work of Elizabeth O’Bagy, a 26-year-old graduate student, to argue in testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the Obama administration should send weapons to arm the “moderate” Free Syrian Army to oppose the Assad government in Syria.

In that article, WND detailed the extensive lobbying efforts conducted in Washington to advance the FSA as a “moderate group,” despite clear evidence the al-Nusra Front – operating under the FSA umbrella – had been declared a terrorist organization by the State Department; had pledged allegiance to al-Qaida’s top leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri; and was the group of choice for foreign jihadi fighters pouring into Syria.

Clinton ‘changed sides in war on terror’

WND reported in 2015 the Obama White House and the State Department under the management of Hillary Clinton “changed sides in the war on terror” in 2011 by implementing a policy of facilitating the delivery of weapons to the al-Qaida-dominated rebel militias in Libya attempting to oust Gadhafi, the Citizens Commission on Benghazi concluded in its interim report.

The April 22, 2014, report, “How America Changed sides in the War on Terror,” alleges “the U.S. was fully aware of and facilitating the delivery of weapons to the Al Qaeda-dominated rebel militias throughout the 2011 rebellion.”

The report asserted the agenda of al-Qaida-affiliated jihadis in the region, including the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group and other Islamic terror groups represented among the rebel forces, was well known to U.S. officials responsible for Libya policy.

“The rebels made no secret of their Al Qaeda affiliation, openly flying and speaking in front of the black flag of Islamic jihad, according to author John Rosenthal and multiple media reports,” the interim report said. “And yet, the White House and senior Congressional members deliberately and knowingly pursued a policy that provided material support to terrorist organizations in order to topple a ruler who had been working closely with the West actively to suppress Al Qaeda.”

The report concluded: “The result in Libya, across much of North Africa, and beyond has been utter chaos, disruption of Libya’s oil industry, the spread of dangerous weapons (including surface-to-air missiles), and the empowerment of jihadist organizations like Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood.”

The report identified a key al-Qaida operative who played a major role moving U.S. arms into both Libya and Syria as Abdul Hakim Belhaj, (aka Abdallah al Sadeq). Belhaj was a veteran jihad fighter of Iraq and Afghanistan; commander of the al-Qaida franchise militia, Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), aka Libyan Islamic Movement for Change; a post-revolution military commander of Tripoli; and the Libyan delegation leader to the Free Syrian Army in late 2011.

In September 2014, WND reported Elizabeth O’Bagy, who had been fired from her job with a Washington think-tank after her exposure by WND as a source for Kerry’s argument that the FSA is a “moderate” rebel force in Syria, had also arranged for McCain a trip to Syria in May 2013 in which senator met with Belhaj, who was then represented as a leader of the FSA.

In November 2013, WND reported trusted Libyan expatriates had claimed Belhaj was at large in Libya. The expatriates identified Belhaj as an al-Qaida operative, noting he was at the top of a list of Libyan terrorists banned by the European Union from obtaining entrance visas and was the principal organizer of the terrorist attack in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2011, in which Ambassador Stevens was murdered.
McCarthy reported Aug. 2 Ambassador Stevens had “moved an enormous shipment of weapons from Benghazi to the Syrian ‘rebels’ in Turkey,” as the Obama administration was working in 2011 to determine which Syrian “rebel” forces should be armed.

McCarthy pointed to a New York Times article in 2012, some three months before the Benghazi massacre, that reported CIA operatives were secretly in Turkey helping the Obama administration to decide which Syrian opposition fighters would receive arms clandestinely from the United States to fight the Syrian government.

The Times further reported the weapons including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons were being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries, including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood, and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

McCarthy further noted that before becoming ambassador, Christopher Stevens was the Obama administration’s official liaison to Gadhafi’s Islamist opposition in Libya, including its al-Qaida-linked groups. Among them were the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, with Stevens working directly with Belhaj.

• In Philadelphia, PA, a jihadi opened fire on a cop on January 8, 2016. He fired 13 shots and hit the police officer three times, grievously wounding the man.
• On January 11, 2016, Sens. Ted Cruz and Jeff Sessions said the number of people implicated in radical Islamic terrorist plots in the U.S. has jumped to 113.
• On January 16, 2016, Mohamed Elmi, 31, and Mohamed Salad, 29, both of Calgary,
Canada, were arrested after they invaded the doorway of a neighborhood bar and grievously wounded a 38-year old stranger.

• On February 16, 2016, a court magistrate ruled after hearing the FBI testimony that Khalil Abu-Rayyan, a 21 year old Dearborn, MI man was too much of a threat to public safety and ordered him held without bail. He gets excited by thoughts of beheading Americans, burning people alive and throwing homosexuals off of tall buildings. He’d actually made plans to shoot up a 6,000 member Christians in Detroit, in conversations with an undercover FBI agent.. Witnesses said it was carnage. Some of the patrons fought back by throwing chairs. Police later shot and killed Barry after a short chase. Investigators are trying to determine if Barry attacked the Nazareth Restaurant because he thought the owner was Jewish. In actuality, the restaurant is owned by an Israeli Christian.

• On May 3, 2015 an attack with gunfire was carried by two Radical Islamic Terrorists followers of ISIS at the entrance to the Curtis Culwell Center, in Garland, TX featuring cartoon images of Mohammad—both were shot and killed by a police officer. • In November 17, 2015 A Uzbek Muslim refugee in Boise, ID was convicted of plotting to bomb US military bases.
• On August 14, 2015 three Somali Muslims, Mohamud Mohamed, 36, and Osman Sheikh, 31, Abil Teshome, 23, brutally beat and murdered Freddy Akoa, 49 a Christian in Portland, ME. The attack allegedly took place over the span of several hours, in which Akoa suffered cuts and bruises all over his body, a lacerated liver and 22 rib fractures. However, according to the autopsy, Akoa died as a result of blows to his head.
• Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez murdered five US Armed Forces (1 Navy and 4 Marines) in Chattanooga, TN in July 2015. Mohammad was an immigrant brought here by his family from Kuwait at a young age, and who was later approved for U.S. citizenship, who carried out the Islamist attack that killed the 5 military personnel in Chattanooga.

• On December 14, 2014, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, born to a Muslim African American family, executed two NYC police officers as they sat in their patrol car. Brinsley is reported to have approached the two officers as they were sitting in their patrol car in the notorious crime ridden Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, New York and began firing rounds into the vehicle before fleeing on foot to the closest subway station where he later committed suicide.
• Two Bosnian Muslim refugee in Portland, Oregon was arrested in November 21, 2014 for trying to blow up a Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
• On November 4, 2015 18 year old Faisal Mohammad who had a black ISIS flag in his possessions and a terrorist manifesto, stabbed 4 of his fellow student at U C Merced; police had to shoot him to stop his stabbing spree. He had pro-ISIS propaganda on his computer. The FBI said he was self radicalized.
• In San Bernardino in December 2015 two Middle East Radical Islamic Terrorist, Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, who said they were ISIS, attackers (immigrants) killed 14 civilians and wounded 21 others, were recruited to their jihad by a Muslim Somali refugee who has now moved to Syria, but continues to recruit Jihadist in America using social media.

• An immigrant from Egypt, who subsequently was granted U.S. citizenship, was charged with providing, and conspiring to provide, material support to ISIS, for aiding and abetting a New York college student in receiving terrorist training from ISIS, and conspiring to receive such training. • In September 30, 2014, Alton Nolan, a proponent of Sharia and suspect Radical Islamic Terrorist, beheaded an employee of Vaughan Foods, and was prevented from beheading a second employee in Moor, Oklahoma.
• An immigrant from Afghanistan, who later applied for and received U.S. citizenship, and a legal permanent resident from the Philippines, were convicted for “join Al Q’ieda and the Taliban in order to kill Americans.” (September 2014)

• The 2013 Boston Marathon bombing by Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev; those brothers and their family were Muslim refugees. -The Boston Bombers were granted political asylum and were thus deemed legitimate refugees. • On February 18, 2012, two Radical Islamic Terrorists from Pakistan, who later applied for and received US Citizenship, were apprehended trying to detonate a bomb in New York City
• In September 15, 2012, Amine El Khalifi, and al Q’ieda Radical Islamic Terrorist plotted to do a suicide bombing of the US Capital.
• In 2011 Mohammad Alfatlawi a proponent of Sharia Law was charged with the “Honor Killing” of his wife and daughter in Detroit, Michigan.
• In May 4, 2010 Faisal Shahzad conducted a terrorist car bombing plot in Times Square that failed.
• On June 1, 2009, Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, a convert to Islam, who had gone to Yemen in 2007 and stayed for about 16 months, open fire on a Little Rock, Arkansas US Armed Forces Recruiting Office in a drive by shooting with a rifle, against a group of US Army Soldiers standing in front of the Recruiting Office. He killed Private William Long and wounded Private Quinton Ezeagwula.
• On November 5, 2009, Maj Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 US Army soldiers and wounded 32 others in Fort Hood while yelling “Allah Akbar” at the top of his lungs—Obama insisted it was simply “Work Place Violence” and not a Radical Islamic terrorist attack by a disciple of Anwar Al-Awlaki. Prior to the shooting, in his previous assignment as an intern and resident at Walter Reed Army Medical Center his colleagues and superiors were deeply concerned about his behavior and anti-American comments—but because they were cowered by the Obama’s administration’s warnings and perceived threats to their military standing, that they better be “politically correct’ and not disparage such anti-American comments—nothing was done to drum that Radical Islamic Terrorist out of the US Armed Forces
• In December 2009, the bombing terror plot to kill 290 innocent passengers on a flight from the Netherland to Detroit the Nigerian Radical Islamic Terrorist, Umar Farouk Abdulmutlallab (aka the Underwear Bomber) failed to detonate on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 because the explosives in his underwear malfunctioned, and passengers were able to subdue him until he was arrested.
• Two Al Qaeda members who had killed American soldiers in Iraq were arrested in Kentucky in 2009 – and, both were refugees!

The socialist essayist and novelist George Orwell by 1944 grew depressed that as a cost for the defeat of the Axis Powers the Allies had empowered an equally nightmarish monster in the Soviet Union.

It was not as if right-wing dictators were not equally lethal, but the inclusion of the words “socialist” and “republic” in a left-wing tyrant’s official lexicon tended to fool millions.

Indeed, it was precisely the leftist totalitarians’ habit of embroidering their murderous pursuit of power with professions of “equality,” “fairness,” and “egalitarianism” that so often allowed them to employ any means necessary to achieve their supposedly exalted ends. In sum, in Orwell’s eyes, the radical Left’s erasure of historical memory and its distortion of reality through the manipulation of language were the chief threat of the 20th century.

His 1945 novella Animal Farm — initially difficult for Orwell to publish and deeply hated by Western leftists — was an allegorical warning to liberals of the dangers of left-wing propaganda. Words and phrases changed their meanings — again and again — to serve a tyrannical agenda. The assorted creatures of Orwell’s fictional barnyard frequently wake up to new commandments posted on the barn wall by their Stalinesque pig leaders, with yesterday’s edicts crossed out or modified — and soon to be forgotten.

Given the political sympathies and self-interest of the present mainstream media and cultural elite, when the Obama administration came into power in 2009, we crossed out prior, out-of-power edicts and wrote new establishment versions in their place — as if no one would ever quite know the difference, or would soon forget if he did. Many of us at the time wrote about the nearly Orwellian change in liberal mentality required to accommodate Obama’s many contradictions.

Rich people were suddenly not all bad blue-stocking Republicans, but also hip, valuable Silicon Valley progressives in flip-flops who, with some reluctance, outsourced and off-shored.

In our past eight years of historical revisionism, huge political contributions — like the hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies given by multi-billionaire financial speculator George Soros — were now helpful for democracy if only they were given to left-wing causes.

Once-liberal public campaign-financing laws and limits on fund-raising applied to all candidates except Barack Obama, who became the largest recipient of campaign cash in election history.

Drone assassinations were suddenly, in 2009, no longer proof of Bush’s efforts to kill the innocent abroad, but sophisticated tools in the Obama’s sober anti-terrorism tool kit. Radical Islamic terrorism simply vanished from our collective minds.

Terrorist killing was reinvented as vague “man-caused disasters” and “workplace violence” that occasionally called for American “overseas contingency operations.” If we did not have the phrase “radical Islamic terrorism,” then there would be no radical Islamic terrorism — apparently on the theory that if we ban “gravity” from our vocabulary, we will all instantly float upwards.

More recently, “fake news” did not mean promulgating the lie “Hands up, don’t shoot,” doctoring George Zimmerman’s 911 call, or insisting on national TV that the Benghazi attacks were spontaneous riots sparked by a right-wing American-based video maker, who, for his provocations, was perp-walked and jailed on trumped-up charges of parole violations.

Fake news certainly does not denote the decades-long myth that the hard-Communist and pro-Castro presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was emblematic of the right-wing haters of Texas, or the fantasy mythography of Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father passed off as an autobiographical memoir.

Instead, a supposed epidemic of “fake news” became a means to explain how Donald Trump, the supposedly incompetent buffoon, defeated the polished sure winner Hillary Clinton — who at one time in 2008 presented herself as a heroic stateswoman who had flown into Bosnia while under sniper fire. Executive orders are critical presidential prerogatives when Congress won’t act undermine the Constitution’s separation of powers.

In another classic Orwellian moment, the on-air fabulist and serial prevaricator, newsreader Brian Williams, jumped on the bandwagon to loudly editorialize about the dangers of not telling the truth and passing it off as news. Left unsaid was Williams’s subtext: Believe me about the dangers of fake news, because I was the biggest news faker in network anchor history. Or maybe he wasn’t, given Dan Rather’s “fake but accurate” memos about Bush’s supposedly having gone AWOL during the Vietnam War, a fabricated scandal that Rather peddled to harm the reelection chances of George W. Bush in 2004.

No sooner did the progressive media and bureaucracy establish new barn-wall rules than Obama got set to leave office, soon to be replaced by a President Trump. Now the leftist project must scramble to hit reverse and start all over from the beginning.

On the lighter side, after 2016, expect that the sight of a president golfing in sports attire and shades will be proof of his indolence and privilege, not necessary downtime as it was for an overworked and harried Obama.

If First Lady Melania Trump takes two jumbo jets full of aides and government junketeers to vacation on Spain’s Costa del Sol next year — as did Michelle Obama for her 2010 getaway — expect media outrage over her supposedly callous selfishness and indulgence.
Here are the more serious and latest samples of the corrected Animal Farm Commandments on the American Farm barn wall for the age of the Trump presidency.

1. The Senate filibuster is an archaic and disruptive obstacle to government an essential tool of legislative democracy.

2. The Senate’s “nuclear option” of approving nominees by majority votes is a legitimate tool to restore legislative balance crackpot idea to erode Senate traditions.

3. Pen-and-phone executive orders are critical presidential prerogatives when Congress won’t act undermine the Constitution’s separation of powers.

4. Past Supreme Court decisions are always fluid rulings and hold no real sway over present court prerogatives established judicial precedents that should not be tampered with by current politicized justices.

5. Pressuring private companies like Boeing or Chrysler for political purposes like Carrier to keep jobs in the U.S. is unwise presidential intrusion into the marketplace.

6. Edgy, out-of-the-box foreign-policy outreach to democracies like Taiwan dictatorships like Cuba and Iran is proof of presidential leadership and imagination.

7. Presidential informality like inviting rappers with rap sheets to the White House or doing interviews with GloZell like tweeting and videos are ominous signs of presidential frivolity and immaturity.

8. States-rights nullification of federal law has been traditionally racist, and subversive to the idea of the United States, leading to crisis or war is a legitimate expression of progressive cultural exceptionalism.

9. Running up huge deficits in Keynesian fashion primes the economy is a dangerous sign of presidential laxity.

10. Regular press conferences with vigorous cross-examinations of the president are noisy anachronisms from the bygone age of print journalism a must for a functioning democracy.

11. Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio voting twice for Barack Obama over John McCain and Mitt Romney was at last proof that the white working class was tolerant and enlightened for Trump shows that these deplorable voters are still irredeemable white clingers and supremacists.

12. Worries that registration and voting can be rigged Rioting, demanding superfluous recounts, damning the legitimacy of the Electoral College, and threatening Electors are efforts to subvert American democracy.

13. Criticizing a former president allots proper blame where it belongs for current messes is bad sportsmanship, cheap, and unbecoming.

14. Former presidents making business deals and earning exorbitant speaking and consulting fees as they cash in and globe-trot demeans the office is an acceptable right and welcome duty of an ex-president.

15. Weighing in on contemporary news stories such as the Skip Gates psychodrama or the Trayvon Martin murder case a flag-burning incident is symptomatic of presidential puerility.

16. Vladimir Putin was unfairly alienated by George W. Bush, sophomorically hyped into an existential threat by Mitt Romney, and deserving of reset is dangerous, a Trump fan, and an inveterate enemy of the U.S.

All the above have a shelf-life of about four years and may be recalibrated according to the results of the 2020 election.

Many Americans increasingly seem psychologically, if not materially, disengaged from their own country. A few vote with their feet and move to quieter enclaves in the American rural West or to no-income-tax states in the South and hinterlands. More withdraw with their minds, by shutting out most of the noise emanating from American popular culture, politics, and the media.

I spent my vacation in September in small towns in southern Michigan, and a few days of October traveling to a number of communities in rural California, as well as talking to a variety of people on my farm. In all these venues, I kept meeting the same sort of detached American. Though these men and women came from varying class and ethnic backgrounds, they were united by a sense of malaise. Let me sum up what I think is the new Americanus alienatus.

The American stranger embraces a pessimistic view of this country, rather than the therapeutic view shared by most Americans. Given the nation’s cultural and financial profligacy, he assumes things are going to get worse. Or at least he accepts that they cannot go on as they are. The medicine (that will fall on him to administer) will be as catastrophic as the lethal disease (which he thinks was caused mostly by others).

Stereotyped as a “deplorable” “clinger” and “everyday American,” the stranger certainly has no wish to dispute the new politically correct orthodoxies of open borders, Black Lives Matter, the euphemisms that mask radical Islamic terrorism, record deficits, unsustainable entitlements, and chaos abroad. All of that, he believes, is now the concern of the members of the coastal establishment, whose incestuous lives are glimpsed in the latest WikiLeaks trove.

The disengaged American’s own existential business is survival. It takes all his energy and resources to navigate around the concrete ramifications of what elites have wrought, like failing public school systems, crime-ridden cityscapes, and Kafkaesque bureaucracies. The elites, meanwhile, have far better ways of insulating themselves from the injurious effects of their own ideology.

The stranger believes we are running out of answers to increasing racial and ethnic tensions. As a drop-out himself, when he reads daily of shootings, stabbings, riots, and assaults, he makes a mental note of where they take place, knows enough to keep quiet about them, and plans to stay a safe distance away.

Politics is a turn-off, epitomized this year by the crude Donald Trump and the refined and inveterate prevaricator Hillary Clinton. Both seem to reflect our long-standing hubris, in which we glorified empty celebrities and overlooked the high crimes and misdemeanors of professional politicians, who made their own rules of behavior that ultimately (and logically) permitted destroying government documents, recklessly trafficking in classified information, and selling government influence to the highest bidders. To the extent Trump wins sympathy among estranged Americans, it is largely because he represents the nihilistic choice: the idea of a humiliated and doomed Samson pulling down the pillars of the Philistine temple upon us all apparently has a sort of psychological and vicarious attraction for the American stranger, especially when he reads of the contempt that the elite hold for people like himself.

Neither candidate talks about the financial Armageddon ahead, when raising interest rates will make it nearly impossible to meet existing outlays and service a $20 trillion national debt. In contrast, the quiet American assumes that the remedies of inflation or catastrophic budget cuts in defense and entitlements—or more likely both—are inevitable. He assumes his own financial future is bleak, and his children’s even bleaker. In paranoia, he readies himself for anything, whether that means European-level tax rates or the loss of his private 401K to the insolvent Social Security trust fund. Sometimes, the nuts who advocate buying gold do not seem so nutty to him.

Hypocrisy is the national creed, and the turned-off American survives by navigating around or ignoring it. Illegal aliens, seen as an important new political demographic, are increasingly immune from federal immigration law. Many new immigrants assume that America is the choice destination of the world, but when they get here, they find that the lure of lodging grievances against their generous host is the better path to political influence and government largess. Assimilation, in contrast, is written off as proof of inauthenticity.

The turned-off know well enough to keep quiet about political correctness. They accept that just one wrong word can at any time end careers as a clerk, cop, or teacher. The disaffected also still trust that college is a future investment for their kids, but have no clue how to pay for it. They are also unsure how to weigh the pluses of receiving a bachelor’s degree against the minuses of being indoctrinated by a small, bitter subset of the population.

The quiet American is also cynical. He expects elites to be pretenders. The hacked emails of insiders Colin Powell and John Podesta, and Hillary Clinton’s $250,000 Wall Street chats confirmed what most believed about low-bar Washington values. Trump’s eleven-year old hot-mic vulgarities rebirthed Bill Clinton’s alleged sexual assaults, reminding the cynical that in the age of Miley Cyrus, Chris Brown, and Kim Kardashian, America is both crude and sanctimonious at the same time.

So the drop-out American turns off the media, and not merely because of its 24/7 hyperkinetic frenzy, but because he is fed up by its superficiality and hypocrisy—and its abject partisanship dressed up as edginess. Most journalists assume their role is either to further their own careers or to convince the supposedly ignorant masses to endorse the progressive views embraced by only 20 percent of the population. Either way, millions of Americans have checked out, retiring instead to the blogosphere and comments sections of articles. The alienated American also does not go to the movies much. The reason is not just because excellent entertainment is easily available at home on his various devices. The problem, rather, is the message. A politically warped Hollywood is, like the media, trumpeting political ideas that do not resonate with most viewers.

The alienated American is touched by, but avoids, popular culture. He cannot figure out the attraction of the harsh voices, grating beat, and glorification of misogyny, racism, and violence in rap music. He knows of a Kanye West or Miley Cyrus only to the degree that such entertainers sometimes intrude into the mainstream media, causing confusion over exactly how such untalented exhibitionists ever won an audience, and why, in such a Victorian society such as our own, their obscenities still remain politically correct.

The quiet American was once devoted to televised sports, but increasingly is losing interest there as well. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who refuses to stand for the national anthem on the ground that America is racist, hardly represents speaking truth to power. He is another pampered multimillionaire athlete who has manipulated his sport for personal attention and gain. The alienated American also avoids ESPN and similar sport channels. He believes that life is too short to listen to half-educated jocks posing as Socratic philosophers as they politicize their analyses and try to turn gladiators on the field into heroic progressive humanists.

The media, contemporary politics, sports, Hollywood, popular music, government policy, political correctness, the pretenses of the elite—all of these have driven a sizeable minority of the population into a psychological underground. Every once in a while, I see the alienated American, who gives me a nod or wink at the supermarket or gas station—a confirmation that he has become a stranger in his own strange land.

[And, now, with the Veritas Project Action having videos of the DNC operatives fixing elections, liberal states like NH having laws that state that anyone with an in-state domicile, meaning coming in the day before an election and staying at a hotel, can vote simply by showing up and stating that they are domiciled in NH and are a citizen, the simple statement being enough to prove citizenship, the alienation is also caused by the political elite emasculating the “regular citizen”. For a political party that loves to label their opponents as bigots, it’s remarkable how bigoted the Obama administration has been for the last 8 years against Christian religious teachings and Christians in the US Armed Forces who can’t fight back. Christians who have deep religious convictions also have their well held and sincere religious beliefs with regard to abortion, homosexuality, males using girls bathrooms & showers in schools, and have their opposition to teaching very young & innocent grammar school students about homosexuality. According to former counter-terrorism training officer and American police detective George Tobias, in the below listed article, the Clinton administration would continue Obama’s bigotry toward Christians,”

The latest WikiLeaks dump of John Podesta E-mails shows that the Obama administration kept a list of high-profile Muslims it wanted to appoint to top Obama administration jobs, sub-cabinet jobs, outside boards, agencies, and policy committees. The 2008 E-mails reveal that it wasn’t enough to be Arab American, you had to be Arab and Muslim to make it onto Obama’s list.

“Many Lebanese Americans, for example, are Christian,” notes one E-mail written by Preeta Bansal, who worked on the Obama transition team headed by John Podesta. John Podesta is now Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Campaign Chairman. “In the last list (of outside boards/commissions), most who are listed appear to be Muslim American, except that a handful (where noted) may be Arab American but of an unacceptable religion (esp. Christian).”

In another indication of outright the bigotry against Christians by the Obama administration, a law suit was filed against DHS by the Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center, a progressive liberal advocacy organization. Heartland is “dedicated to ensuring human rights protections” for immigrants and asylum seekers—including apparently for terrorists. Heartland filed a FOIA lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security for discriminating against Syrian and Assyrian Christian refugees for the last 5 years.

In an otherwise unremarkable opinion, obtained after filing, a Federal Freedom of Information Act request, a Federal Appellate Court Judge issued a sharp rejoinder to the Obama administration over an issue that has been written about and broadcast in the national news media. The Appellate Judge said there was almost a complete lack of Syrian Christian refugees being brought into the US—the numbers are included in the below listed article.

The lawsuit also claimed that DHS was refusing to release the identity of Tier III terrorist organizations, unlike the identities of what are defined as Tier I and Tier II terrorist organizations that are publicly identified.

Tier III terrorist organizations “tend to be groups about which the U.S. government does not have good intelligence, making it essential that [DHS] be able to obtain information about them during screening interviews that are as focused and complete as possible.” Despite the lack of information, Obama refused to let the FBI interview entering Muslim refugees to determine if they had terrorist ties

To further reveal the bigotry against Christians practiced by Obama and Hillary’s State Department the following facts are submitted. Although ten percent of the population of Syria are Syrian and Assyrian Christian, yet despite that fact, less than one-half of 1 percent of the Syrian Refugees admitted to the United States over the last 8 years were Christian. Syrian and Assyrian Christians have been in desperate need of a safe haven from ISIS Radical Islamic Terrorists who have been butchering, and slaughtering Christians for those 5 years.

ISIS has been crucifying Christians, burning them alive, drowning them in cages, beheading them, burying them alive, and making them kneel before shooting them in the back of their heads. Of the nearly 11,000 Syrian Refugees recently allowed to enter the United States by Obama, only 56 Christians were among them. The Greek Catholic Relief Agency has over 300,000 Syrian and Assyrian Christians in camps seeking entry into the US, but Obama has refused to let them enter the US for the last 5 years.

Few if any of the ISIS Radical Islamic Terrorists are being held accountable for their heinous crimes against Syrian and Assyrian Christians. Besides slaughtering Syrian and Assyrian Christians, much of Iraq’s Christian community has been ripped from their ancient ancestral homes on the Plains of Nineveh. The ISIS Radical Islamic Terrorists are also responsible for the destruction of their Christians’ cultural heritage symbols in their churches, ancient bibles, 2000 year old Christian churches, and Assyrian Christian monasteries. However, while Obama frets over Islamophobia, hardly anything is said about the horrors faced by the defenseless followers of Jesus Christ.

So while the Obama administration has brought in over 900,000+ Middle East Muslim Refugees into the US, and has resettled them in 187 cities throughout the United States, much less than ½ of 1 percent of the entering refugees were Christians. Obama has been concealing basic information about the entering Muslim refugees, behind a wall of government secrecy, and at the same time refusing to let the FBI interview entering Muslim refugees to determine if they have terrorist ties,

The 900,000+ Middle East Muslim Refugees that have been resettled throughout the US, without strict instruction to the resettling agencies not to inform elected local & state officials and their law enforcement agencies where those refugees are being placed. Despite the fact that the Syrian refugee crisis is the catalyst that was responsible for the infiltration ISIS Radical Islamic Terrorists into Western Europe, resulting in many murderous Radical Islamic Terrorist attacks against unsuspecting Europeans. ISIS has openly bragged that the terrorists that they trained, would also be infiltrated into the United States.

Obama is threatening to veto the current Military Budget passed by Congress that is currently sitting on his desk awaiting his signature, because it protects Christians religious beliefs. Obama wants the absolute freedom to discriminate against Christian social service providers who interact with the government—all because many of those religious organizations are unable to endorse the LGBT cause, because of their well held religious teachings and beliefs. The Russell Amendment in the budget, authored by an endorsed Combat Veteran For Congress, Cong Steve Russell. LTC-USA (Ret) (R-OK-5), merely reaffirms the protection of Christians and Jewish members of the military, while clarifying that religious organizations (Jewish and Christian) have a right to employ people committed to authentically live and operate in accordance with their faith tenets. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act already specifically protects a religious organizations’ ability to hire based on religion. In short, Christian and Jewish religious organizations are free to be religious organizations.

Obama’s previously violated the Religious Freedom of Chaplins who were refused the right to read letters to their congregations from the pulpit from their Cardinals (the very reason why the Pilgrims left England and migrated to America in 1620). That restriction imposed by Obama, not only violates the Chaplin’s Freedom of Religion, it also a violates their Freedom of Speech. When it comes to sexual orientation and gender identity policies Obama’s restrictions of the religious beliefs of members of the US Armed Forces is egregious. Obama is the first occupant of the Oval Office to refuse to guarantee Religious Freedom for members of the US Armed Forces.

President Barack Obama and his hopeful successor Hillary Clinton are continuing their open-door policy to Muslim refugees fleeing the turmoil in Syria, Iraq and other regions, but a number of American Christian organizations claim the two Democrat leaders have shown less sympathy for Syrian and Iraqi Christians.

In fact, of the 10,801 brought into the United States by the end of September, only 56 of them are listed as Christians (see numerical breakdown below). The vast majority of the Muslims are part of the Sunni sect, which is the one represented by the likes of Al Q’ida, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Al-Shabaab (Somalia) and others.

“For a political party that loves to label their opponents as bigots, it’s remarkable how bigoted the current administration is and how bigoted the Clinton administration will continue to be against Christians,” said former counter-terrorism training officer and American police detective George Tobiaso.

According to several news reports from outlets in the United States and Europe, more than 70 mass graves were discovered in Iraq and Syria containing thousands of decaying bodies killed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other Islamic terrorist groups who buried the victims of their atrocities.

As many as 15,000 victims — men, women and children — slaughtered during the occupation of towns and villages by ISIS, a group known for executing Christians, may be buried in the sites across territory that was occupied by ISIS, Al Nusra Front or other radical Muslims.

According to the Homeland Security News Wire, “The [Associated Press] used satellite imagery, photos, and interviews, to find the location of seventeen mass graves in Syria and sixteen mass graves in Iraq – although the latter are in areas still too dangerous to excavate. AP says from 5,200 to more than 15,000 ISIS victims are buried in the graves it knows about.”

Few if any are being held accountable for the heinous crimes. Besides the killings, much of Iraq’s Christian community have been ripped from their ancestral homes in Nineveh. The jihadists are also responsible for the destruction of Christians’ cultural heritage. However, while Obama frets over Islamophobia, hardly anything is said about the horrors being faced by followers of Jesus Christ.

Many more mass graves may be found once Isis retreats after losing ground outside of Iraqi cities of Mosul and Raqqa which remain under jihadists’ control.

According to the watchdog group that’s known for its accuracy and diligence: Earlier this year Judicial Watch uncovered State Department records confirming that “Arab extremists” are entering the U.S. through Mexico with the assistance of smuggling network “cells.”

Response to Phyllis’ ‘Wow’ pro-Hillary email

[I got the following email chain of two, one from John responding to Phyllis. I sent John what follows Phyllis’ email to him. Please, think before you vote in November. Keep in mind that not voting is a vote for the other guy.]

John: Lots of famous, incredible/good people experience financial failures as well as other types of failures. I remain unaffiliated as I don’t wholly support any party platform. Indeed, this has been an interesting campaign cycle. Both are bright and either will face new challenges heretofore nuvo. The media have been so provocative. I could covet them with plenty of other pejoratives as well.

All would do well to forget about scrutinizing personal medical, income tax, family and concentrate on defining issues and solutions to problems. This isn’t just a battle for public office. It’s a chance to explore/expose and hopefully create workable solutions to our many problems that we face now and towards perpetuity. Please God, May we the people choose wisely.

Hi–I was surprised to read that Meg Whitmann is now campaigning for Hillary Clinton. Ms. Whitmann called Trump a loutish demagogue. Warrenn Buffett, Michael Bloomberg and Mark Cuban have also endorsed Hillary. John, the man is just too volatile, ignorant of knowledge about the world and dangerous to be President. A man who has declared bankruptcy 6 times? That means that he cheated a lot of people. Frankly, I’ve heard him a few times and found him frightening because he sounds like Hitler.

Bill and Madelaine Albright gave all sorts of secrets and patents and protected business secrets to the Chinese for, as Madelaine Albright was caught on tape when exiting the U.N. saying, that we cannot have a single super-power, so she and Bill were building up China to ‘balance’ the world. Just look at all of those Sino-American scientists charged by the FBI for espionage during the ‘90’s who ‘magically’ had the charges dropped and then never heard from again. All working at Los Alamos, too.

Hillary committed a felony when she destroyed evidence after receiving a subpoena to produce documents. If you know anything about MS Word, what they did to locate those 37,000 emails, was to enter keywords, such as ‘secret,’ ‘top secret,’ &c into the search box, then deleted them all and then over-wrote them, which means that ALL of the missing emails were classified!

She was a complete failure as Secretary of State, ran ‘Fast and Furious’ in cahoots with the racist anti-Semite Eric Holder, had the failed Russian Reboot, no one still knows where she really was during the Benghazi disaster although some sources state that it was supposed to be a kidnapping so that her buddies could exchange an ambassador for Jihadists held at Gitmo.

She has been in contempt of congress more than once.

She has been in continued violation of the Lawyers’ Professional Code of Conduct since being fired from her job as an intern during the Watergate Hearings. She’s been suspended from practice, disbarred and reinstated, failed bar exams finally passing the Arkansas exam.

The list just goes on, and on, and on.

AS to Buffet, he owns the railroads carrying the oil from the Canadian oil fields. That is why he is against the XL Pipeline. The RR has refused to upgrade the tracks, because Buffet knows that the pipeline is a certainty, which is why every 17th train derails and spills tons of oil into the environment, but neither Obama’s OSHA nor his EPA will do anything about it. Buffet makes billions of $ under Obama, and will continue to do so under Clinton as will Cuban and Soros.

Bloomberg is the idiot who has allowed crime back into NYC after Rudy kicked it out; he is also the idiot behind the can’t have 32oz drinks, no sugar, no salt, &c in restaurants.

Mark Cuban is an idiot, and Meg Whitman has probably been promised SCOTUS, after Hillary fills Scalia’s seat with Obama.

As for business bankruptcies, they happen.

According to Hillary, even with the $20,000,000 advance the publishers gave Bill and her for their memoirs, she claimed to be broke coming out of the White House. Anybody who is so stupid as to claim insolvency with $20,000,000 in cash, a guaranteed pension for life of over $1,000,000/yr, guaranteed healthcare, not medicare so $0 premiums, for life, a $14,000,000 estate in Westchester County NY, &c, should not be allowed near the federal budget.

Phyllis should look to the issues, see what Trump is proposing compared to Hillary’s lies and frauds and plans that are guaranteed to not work, like Hillary-Care, Amnesty, The Arab Spring, tax raise for all those making over $125,000 (filing jointly, no less), and how Charity Navigator can’t rate the Clinton Foundation because it is really a money laundering scheme, (give money to the Canadian Clinton Foundation, and they will forward it to the Arkansas Clinton Foundation – a clear violation of the OCC regs [Office of the Comptroller of the Currency] as Canada does not require reporting of all transfers of $5,000 or more, which the OCC does).

Trump has been putting forth some good plans and the people that he’s already suggested for his cabinet and SCOTUS show that he’d be a zillion times better as prez than Hillary.

BTW, Phyllis does understand that Hillary supported the Iran-nuke deal, which means that within ten years Tel Aviv will be nuked by a terrorist truck nuke device, driven in from Egypt, doesn’t she? She does understand that about 9% of all Muslims are openly declared Jihadis, which means that under Hillary, there is a good chance that within ten years either she or one of her family will be attacked because they are Jewish and not Muslims, doesn’t she?

Of the just let in 10,000 Syrians, 99,954 are Muslim.

In the last 7 1/2 years, Obama has already let in over over 2,000,000 Muslims from around the world, including 1,000,000 Palestinians. Meaning that there are over 180,000 declared Jihadis in the country just waiting for an opportunity to kill a Jew or Christian, or LGBTQQ, or a woman who shows too much skin or otherwise violates Sha’Ria Law. And, she is aware that NYC Mayor Deblasio has appointed a Sha’Ria judge to the Brooklyn Borough Municipal Court, isn’t she?

I’ve been a Truman Democrat all of my life, accepted the Coward Kennedy as a compromise, and was ashamed of the Cowardly Criminal Carter. I did not vote for Clinton or Obummer. The current GOP is, if one looks at their philosophy and actions, really a reincarnation of the Kennedy administration.

If one wishes to make similies with Hitler, Stalin, and Mao, look at Hillary, Bill, and Obama.

Dick Morris’ bio of Hillary Clinton [nc]

Dick Morris is a nationally recognized political campaign adviser, analyst and author. He was the senior political adviser to Bill Clinton before and after his occupation of the White House. He was campaign manager of Clinton’s 1996 re-election, and the architect of his successful “triangulation” rhetorical ruse. Clinton’s communications director George Stephanopoulos said of Morris, “No single person had more power over [Bill Clinton].”

This week, in a message entitled “What Bill Left Out, Morris corrected the record regarding Clinton’s glowing remarks about Hillary Clinton, her personal attributes and professional achievements. Morris’s insights into the Clintons are priceless.

What follows is a transcript of Morris’s comments:

“Bill Clinton talked at length about Hillary’s idealistic work in college and law school, but he omits that she was defending the Black Panthers who killed security guards; they were on trial in New Haven. She monitored the trial while she was in law school to find evidence that could be grounds for reversal in the event they were convicted.

“That summer she went to work for the True-Haft (SP) law firm in CA, headed by True Haft who is the head of the CA Communist Party and that’s when she got involved with Saul Alinsky, who became something of a mentor for the rest of her life.

“Then Bill says that she went off to Massachusetts and he went to Arkansas, and eventually Hillary followed her heart to join him in Arkansas. He omits that she went to work for the Watergate Committee and was fired from that job for taking home evidence and hiding documents that they needed in the impeachment inquiry. Then she took the DC Bar exam and flunked it. She went to Arkansas because that is the only bar exam she could pass.

“He talked about how in the 1970’s she took all kinds of pro-bono cases to defend women and children. In her memoirs, she cites one which was a custody case and that’s it. In fact, in 1975 she represented a guy accused of raping a 14-year-old girl and got him off by claiming the girl had had fantasies of sex with an older man. In 1980 she gave an interview about it and she joked that she knew the guy was guilty but got him off anyway.

“Then Bill discusses Hillary’s legal career at the Rose Law firm. He doesn’t mention that she made partner when he was elected governor and was only hired when he got elected as attorney general.

“He makes as if it was a public service job — it wasn’t. Her main job was to get state business, and she got tens-of-millions of dollars of state business, then hid her participation and the fees by taking an extra share of non-state business to compensate for the fees on state business that she brought in. Her other job was to call the state banking commissioner any time one of her banks got into trouble to get them off.

“Bill speaks at length how Hillary was a mother, juggling career and family, taking Chelsea to soccer games and stuff — that’s nonsense. Hillary was a mother but Chelsea in the Arkansas governor’s mansion had a staff of nannies and agents to drive her around and people to be with her, and Hillary didn’t have to bother with any of that. All of that was paid for by the state.

“He says she became the warrior in chief over the family finances and that was true, and the result is she learned how to steal.

“She accepted a $100,000 bribe from the poultry industry in return for Bill going easy on regulating them, despite new standards. Jim Blair, the poultry lobbyist, gave her $1,000 to invest in the Futures Market and lined up seven to eight other investors and their winnings were all deposited into Hillary’s account. She made $100,000 in a year and she was out. That essentially was a bribe.

”[She did] a phony real-estate deal for Jim McDougal and the Madison Bank to deceive the federal regulators by pretending someone else was buying the property. She was called before a grand jury in 1995 about that but, conveniently, the billing records were lost, couldn’t be found and there wasn’t proof that she worked on it.

“Bill talks about her work on the health care task force but doesn’t say the reason it didn’t pass was the task force was discredited because the meetings were all held in secret. A federal judge forced them open and fined the task force several hundred thousand dollars because of their secrecy.

“He says that after the health care bill failed in 1994, Hillary went to work on adopting each piece of it piecemeal — mainly health insurance for children.

“That is completely the opposite of the truth. The fact is when that bill failed, I called Hillary and I suggested that she support a proposal by Republican Bob Dole that we cover children, and she said, ‘We can’t just cover one part of this. You have to change everything or change nothing.’ Then in 1997 when I repeated that advice to Bill Clinton, we worked together to pass the Children’s Health Insurance Program. I found a lot of the money for that in the tobacco settlement that my friend Dick Scruggs was negotiating.

“Then Bill extols her record in the U.S. Senate. In fact, she did practically nothing. There were seven or eight bills that she introduced that passed; almost all of which were symbolic — renaming a courthouse, congratulating a high school team on winning the championship. There was only one vaguely substantive bill, and that had a lot of co-sponsors of whom Hillary was just one.

“Then he goes to her record in the State Department and manages to tell that story without mentioning the word Benghazi, without mentioning her secret emails, without mentioning he was getting tens of millions — $220 million in speaking fees in return for favorable actions by the State Department.

“Also totally lacking in the speech was anything about the war on terror — terror is a word you don’t hear at the Democratic Convention.

“Bill says that Hillary passed tough sanctions on Iran for their nuclear program. The opposite is true.

“Every time a tough sanction bill was introduced by Senators Menendez or Kirk, Hillary would send Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman to Capital Hill to testify against it and urge it not to pass, and it was over Hillary’s objections that those sanctions were put into place.

”[Liberal columnist] Maureen Dowd called the speech by Bill Clinton “air brushed.”

“It was a hell of a lot more than that — it was fiction.

(Also see Morris’s comments after Clinton’s DNC acceptance speech. “Its strategy and message will be interdicted by reality at every turn. … She basically has no message. … Her entire campaign is, ‘I’m a woman and I am running against Donald Trump. … She began her speech by saying let’s compromise and work together. You say we need to have a conversation about race in America .

Fair enough.

But this time, it has to be a two-way conversation.

White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to. This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard.
And among them are these:

First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks.

It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christianity, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known. Jeremiah Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the ’60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream.

Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks — with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas — to advance black applicants over white applicants.

Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated their time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.

We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?

What more opportunity is it that the White people need to give to help the Blacks?

If the poor white got this much opportunity there would be no poor white or lower class of white trash people!!

The main problem why black people are not progressing is the, “They owe me factor!!”
Get it in your head!

NOBODY OWES YOU ANYTHING!

Obama talks about new ‘ladders of opportunity’ for blacks. Let him go to Altoona and Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for ‘deserving’ white kids?

Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for African-Americans are seven times those of white America ?

Is it really white America ‘s fault that illegitimacy in the African-American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 50 percent?

Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community itself?

As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial crimes of violence.

Is Barack Obama aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?

Is Obama aware that black-on-white rapes are 100 times more common than the reverse, and that black-on-white robberies were 139 times as common in the first three years of this decade as the reverse?

We have all heard ad nauseam from the Rev. Al about Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape case and Jena . And all turned out to be hoaxes. But about the epidemic of black assaults on whites that are real, we hear nothing.

Sorry, Barack, some of us have heard it all before, about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars ago.

I am not racist, I am not violent, I am just not silent anymore.

The following is adapted from a speech delivered on May 14, 2016, at Hillsdale College’s 164th Commencement ceremony.

President Arnn, members of the board of trustees, assembled faculty, families and friends, and, most important, members of the Hillsdale College Class of 2016, I am both honored and grateful to participate in these commencement exercises. It has been some years since my wife Virginia and I have been to Hillsdale together. Of course we have known Dr. and Mrs. Arnn for many, many years, and we have been quite close to Hillsdale throughout his tenure. We admire the work that is being done here to educate young men and women—one of whom, Hillsdale graduate David Morrell, a wonderful young man, served as one of my law clerks a few years back.

This has been a most difficult term at the Court. The difficulty is underscored by the sudden and tragic passing of my colleague and friend, Justice Antonin Scalia. I think it is fitting to say a few words about him. Many will focus on his intellect and his legal prowess. I do not demur on either count. But there is so much more than that. When I think of Justice Scalia, I think of the good man who I could instinctively trust during my first days on the Court. He was, in the tradition of the South of my youth, a man of his word, a man of character. Over the almost 25 years that we were together on the Court, I think we made it a better place for each other. I know that he did for me. He was kind to me when it mattered most. He is, and will be, sorely missed.

As the years since I attended college edge toward a half century, I feel a bit out of place talking with college students or recent graduates. So much has changed since I left college in 1971. Things that were considered firm have long since lost their vitality, and much that seemed inconceivable is now firmly or universally established. Hallmarks of my youth, such as patriotism and religion, seem more like outliers, if not afterthoughts. So in a sense, I feel woefully out of place speaking at commencement ceremonies. My words will perhaps seem somewhat vintage in character rather than current or up-to-date. In that context, I admit to being unapologetically Catholic, unapologetically patriotic, and unapologetically a constitutionalist.
In my youth, we had a small farm. I am convinced that the time I spent there had much to do with my firm resolve never to farm again. Work seemed to spring eternal, like the weeds that consumed so much of our time and efforts. One of the messages constantly conveyed in those days was our obligation to take care of the land and to use it to produce food for ourselves and for others. If there was to be independence, self-sufficiency, or freedom, then we first had to understand, accept, and discharge our responsibilities. The latter were the necessary (but not always sufficient) antecedents or precursors of the former. The only guarantee was that if you did not discharge your responsibilities, there could be no independence, no self-sufficiency, and no freedom.

In a broader context, we were obligated in our neighborhood to be good neighbors so that the neighborhood would thrive. Whether there was to be a clean, thriving neighborhood was directly connected to our efforts. So there was always, to our way of thinking, a connection between the things we valued most and our personal obligations or efforts. There could be no freedom without each of us discharging our responsibilities. When we heard the words duty, honor, and country, no more needed to be said. But that is a bygone era. Today, we rarely hear of our personal responsibilities in discussions of broad notions such as freedom or liberty. It is as though freedom and liberty exist wholly independent of anything we do, as if they are predestined.

Related to this, our era is one in which different treatment or different outcomes are inherently suspect. It is all too commonly thought that we all deserve the same reward or the same status, notwithstanding the differences in our efforts or in our abilities. This is why we hear so often about what is deserved or who is entitled. By this way of thinking, the student who treats spring break like a seven-day bacchanalia is entitled to the same success as the conscientious classmate who works and studies while he plays. And isn’t this same sense of entitlement often applied today to freedom?

At the end of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin was asked what the gathering had accomplished. “A republic,” he replied, “if you can keep it.” Nearly a century later, in a two-minute speech at Gettysburg, President Lincoln spoke similarly. It is for the current generation, he said,

“to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
So many who have gone before us have done precisely that, dedicating their lives to preserving and enhancing our nation both in war and in peace, taking care that those who have given the last full measure of devotion have not done so in vain.”

Being at Hillsdale College, it is appropriate that we should reflect briefly on our ancestors’ understanding of what was to be earned and preserved. America’s Founders and many successive generations believed in natural rights. To establish a government based on the consent of the governed, as the Declaration of Independence makes clear, they gave up only that portion of their rights necessary to create a limited government of the kind needed to secure all of their rights. The Founders then structured that government so that it could not jeopardize the liberty that flowed from natural rights. Even though this liberty is inherent, it is not guaranteed. Indeed, the founding documents of our country are an assertion of this liberty against the King of England—arguably the most powerful man in the world at the time—at the risk of the Founders’ lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. Over the lifespan of our great country, many occasions have arisen that required this liberty, and the form of government that ensures it, to be defended if it was to survive.

At the risk of understating what is necessary to preserve liberty and our form of government, I think more and more that it depends on good citizens discharging their daily duties and obligations. Here I resist what seems to be the formulaic or standard fare at commencement exercises—a broad complaint about societal injustice and an exhortation to the young graduates to go out and solve the problem and change the world. Having been a young graduate myself, I think it is hard enough to solve your own problems, which can sometimes seem to defy solution. And in addressing your own obligations and responsibilities in the right way, you actually do an important part on behalf of liberty and free government.

Throughout my youth, even as the contradiction of segregation persisted, we revered the ideals of our great nation. We knew, of course, that our country was flawed, as are all human institutions. But we also knew that our best hope lay in the ideal of liberty. I watched with anguish as so many of the older people in my life groped and stumbled through the darkness of near or total illiteracy. Yet they desperately wanted to learn and gain knowledge, and they understood implicitly how important it was to enjoy the fullness of American citizenship. They had spent an aggregation of lifetimes standing on the edge of the dual citizenship that is at the heart of the 14th Amendment.

During the Second World War, they were willing to fight for the right to die on foreign soil to defend their country, even as their patriotic love went unreciprocated. They returned from that horrific war with dignity to face the indignity of discrimination. Yet the desire persisted to push our nation to live up to its ideals.

I often wondered why my grandparents remained such model citizens, even when our country’s failures were so obvious. In the arrogance of my early adult life, I challenged my grandfather and doubted America’s ideals. He bluntly asked: “So, where else would you live?” Though not a lettered man, he knew that our constitutional ideals remained our best hope, and that we should work to achieve them rather than undermine them. “Son,” he said, “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” That is, don’t discard what is precious along with what is tainted.

Today, when it seems that grievance rather than responsibility is the main means of elevation, my grandfather’s beliefs may sound odd or discordant. But he and others like him at the time resolved to conduct themselves in a way consistent with America’s ideals. They were law-abiding, hardworking, and disciplined. They discharged their responsibilities to their families and neighbors as best they could. They taught us that despite unfair treatment, we were to be good citizens and good people. If we were to have a functioning neighborhood, we first had to be good neighbors. If we were to have a good city, state, and country, we first had to be good citizens. The same went for our school and our church. We were to keep in mind the corporal works of mercy and the great commandment: “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Being wronged by others did not justify reciprocal conduct. Right was right, and two wrongs did not make a right. What we wanted to do did not define what was right—nor, I might add, did our capacious litany of wants define liberty. Rather, what was right defined what we were required to do and what we were permitted to do. It defined our duties and our responsibilities. Whether those duties meant cutting our neighbor’s lawn, visiting the sick, feeding the hungry, or going off to war as my brother did, we were to discharge them honorably.

Shortly before his death in 1983, I sought my grandfather’s advice about how to weather the first wave of harsh criticism directed at me, which I admit had somewhat unnerved me. His re-sponse was simple: “Son, you have to stand up for what you believe in.” To him, that was my obligation, my duty. Perhaps it is at times like that—when you lack strength and courage—that the clarity of our obligation supplies both: duty, honor, country.
As I admitted at the outset, I am of a different time. I knew no one, for example, who was surprised at President Kennedy’s famous exhortation in his 1961 Inaugural Address: “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” That sentiment was as common as saying the Pledge of Allegiance or singing the National Anthem, as pervasive as shopping at Army-Navy surplus stores. Today there is much more focus on our rights and on what we are owed, and much less on our obligations and duties—unless, of course, it is about our duty to submit to some new proposed policy.

My grandfather often reminded us that if we didn’t work, we didn’t eat, and that if we didn’t plant, we couldn’t harvest. There is always a relationship between responsibilities and benefits. In agrarian societies, that is more obvious. As society becomes more complex and specialized, it is more difficult to discern. But it is equally true. If you continue to run up charges on your credit card, at some point you reach your credit limit. If you continue to make withdrawals from your savings account, you eventually deplete your funds. Likewise, if we continue to consume the benefits of a free society without replenishing or nourishing that society, we will eventually deplete that as well. If we are content to let others do the work of replenishing and defending liberty while we consume the benefits, we will someday run out of other people’s willingness to sacrifice—or even out of courageous people willing to make the sacrifice.
But this is Hillsdale College, which is like a shining city on a hill. This College, in the words of your mission statement, “considers itself a trustee of a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.” The very existence of Hillsdale connotes independence, because Hillsdale, like America, was founded on the idea that liberty is an antecedent of government, not a benefit from government.

Let me offer you, this year’s graduates, a few brief suggestions about making your deposits in the account of liberty. Today is just the end of the beginning of your young lives, and the beginning, the commencement of the rest of your lives. There is much more to come, and it will not be with the guiding hands of your parents—indeed, they may someday need your hand to guide them. Some of you will most assuredly be called upon to do very hard things to preserve liberty. All of you will be called upon to provide a firm foundation of citizenship by carrying out your obligations in the way so many preceding generations have done. You are to be the example to others that those generations have been to us. And in being that example, what you do will matter far more than what you say.

As the years have moved swiftly by, I have often reflected on the important citizenship lessons of my life. For the most part, it was the unplanned array of small things. There was the kind gesture from a neighbor. There was my grandmother dividing our dinner because someone showed up unannounced. There was the stranger stopping to help us get our crops out of the field before a big storm. There were the nuns who believed in us and lived in our neighborhood. There was the librarian who brought books to Mass so that I would not be without reading on the farm. Small gestures such as these become large lessons about how to live our lives. We watched and learned what it means to be a good person, a good neighbor, a good citizen. Who will be watching you? And what will you be teaching them?

After this commencement ceremony ends, I implore you to take a few minutes to thank those who made it possible for you to come this far—your parents, your teachers, your pastor. These are the people who have shown you how to sacrifice for those you love, even when that sacrifice is not always appreciated. As you go through life, try to be a person whose actions teach others how to be better people and better citizens. Reach out to the shy person who is not so popular. Stand up for others when they’re being treated unfairly. Take the time to listen to the friend who’s having a difficult time. Do not hide your faith and your beliefs under a bushel basket, especially in this world that seems to have gone mad with political correctness. Treat others the way you would like to be treated if you stood in their shoes.

These small lessons become the unplanned syllabus for learning citizenship, and your efforts to live them will help to form the fabric of a civil society and a free and prosperous nation where inherent equality and liberty are inviolable. You are men and women of Hillsdale College, a school that has stood fast on its principles and its traditions at great sacrifice. If you don’t lead by example, who will?

I have every faith that you will be a beacon of light for others to follow, like “a city on a hill [that] cannot be hidden.” May God bless each of you now and throughout your lives, and may God bless America.

Open Response to Secession Conditions query

[The initial question posed was, how soon do I think that the conditions for revolution/secession be met? I responded with mid-to-late 2018 that the conditions listed by Thomas Jefferson’s “Declaration of Independence 1776” will be met. The problem of actual secession and the saving of America, depends on the following:]

I think that the conditions that Jefferson listed in the 1776 Declaration of Independence will be met that soon. Whether or not the Red States will do anything at that time, I doubt. Too many disengaged sheeple. Over 1/3 of the population is drinking koolaid and supporting the Obamaites and Clintonites. The rich, who started and supported the 1776 secession, have protected and insulated themselves from the federal government.

The NRA has less than 5 million members. That membership is less than the number of people who subscribe to Playboy magazine, who is about to stop having pictures of nude women in it as the photos are limiting its appeal. Counting the illegals, there are over 330,000,000 people in the U.S. Nobody knows how well armed the illegal’s gangs are, but every major city 6 pm news has a crime report that includes them – look how many deaths in black ‘hoods that go unsolved, in K.C. I think that it is over 87%.

For all the sale of firearms, I see no interest in secession, just self-defense and the beginnings of a reform movement, the Tea Party having been suppressed. Federal government, by virtue of technology, is able to locate and destroy the seeds of serious dissent, note Ruby Ridge in Waco TX and how astoundingly excessive the FBI reacted, and this during the Clinton Administration and good economic times.

Veterans with combat skills, ie The American Legion and the VFW, are in groups run by NCO’s, officers having no interest in us or our organizations where they aren’t worshipped by us, have been co-opted by the feds and congressmen promising, but certainly not delivering, VA benefits, healthcare, financial support &c. Notice how even the VA Home Loan program created the FHA, HARP, &c. Note the VA scandals and how they’ve grown since the first limitation of healthcare to Viet Nam Vets in the 1970’s by Carter and Carter’s blanket amnesty to draft dodgers, of whom one was Bill Clinton thereby erasing his felony and allowing him access to the Oval Office.

So, conditions listed by Jefferson should be met, regardless of who wins the 2016 election, in mid to late 2018. Secession will actually depend upon the collapse of the economy into a complete global depression, coupled to Jihadist terrorism. Secession will, in my opinion, be the least violent and bloody of the alternatives if it happens before the riots.

New Orleans, Baltimore & Ferguson (and look at the futbol hooliganism riots in the E.U. as to their respect for law and order and how poor their controls are – and they are exacerbated by the Muslim “immigrants”) are the indicators on how bloody the Black Sub-Culture will make things, the actions at Mizzou by the sexist & racist students and the Black Lives Matter reaction to the Orlando terrorist murders of LGBT, the unconstitutional importation of millions of Muslims, and the rich being completely insulated from it all by virtue of their private militias and gated communities – just look at how the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Serbia &c. have fallen into militia/gated anarchy – have created anarchy and economic chaos. Yellen continuing the no rate hike and jobs being continuing to be sent to China. Also, look at the riots around Trump Events, the attacks on Free Speech, and the attacks on Due Process especially as Due Process applies to the Second Amendment and firearms access.

Areas mentioned had/have survived because the U.S., the E.U., and the U.N., have sent trillions in aid to them. If the U.S. fails, and the E.U. will fail with the British Exit which is probable with next week’s vote, the global economy fails, and the entire current global support net fails. Look at some of the “News You’re Not Getting Elsewhere” posts to see how chaotic things are getting. What reason does Indonesia have to purchase Leopard MBT’s (Main Battle Tanks)? Whom are they going to use them against?

It will be bloody without secession. Secession, as written and posted on the blog, avoids the bloody revolution. Secession keeps all of our Christian-Protestant American values intact. It will force the Blue States to reform before the violence trigger is pulled, which in turn will force Europe to reform before it collapses completely, thus, Christian values will survive long enough to withstand the Muslim onslaught.

Otherwise, 5/6’s of the World’s population will be destroyed and/or enslaved. Mankind will fall into a Dark Ages from which it will not return. The probability of incurable diseases blossoming and destroying the remaining 1/6 is over 50% as shown by the presenting at Emergency Rooms in Europe of Muslims with TB, Syphillis, Gonorhea, polio, HIV/aids, &c. I posted a report by Britain’s National Health Service on Muslim presentiment and burden on the NHS.

If you’ve some idea of what to do other than scream at our elected elite to secede, I’m probably on board, so let me know.

I assume that YOU have a copy of the Declaration of Independence 1776, and can quickly read the conditions that Jefferson lists. And, can you really see the likes of Joe and Dennis actually coming out and facing the Federales? It’s you and me, the American Legion and the VFW, and maybe the NRA.

BTW I think that I included a copy of the 1860 Declaration of Independence in Albany Plan, if not, you should have gotten copies of Freehling’s “Secession” and “Nullification”. “Secession” not only has a copy of the 1860 but a collection of newspaper editorials similar to The Federalist Papers. Also, there may be a copy in “The South was Right” which I know that you have.

Also, get and read Thomas Sowell’s 1995 “The Vision of the Anointed”. He’s a brother Marine, Korea War Vet, and his viewpoint is similar to ours and worth reading for the info and for his conclusions and solutions. With the death of James Q. Wilson a few years ago, he’s the premier conservative philosopher alive.

two years, a protest movement known as “Black Lives Matter” has
convulsed the nation. Triggered by the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson,
Missouri, in August 2014, the Black Lives Matter movement holds that racist police
officers are the greatest threat facing young black men today. This belief has triggered
riots, “die-ins,” the murder and attempted murder of police officers, a campaign to
eliminate traditional grand jury proceedings when police use lethal force, and a presi

dential task force on policing.

the face of the relentless venom directed at
them on the street and in the media. As a
result, violent crime is on the rise.
The need is urgent, therefore, to
examine the Black Lives Matter move

ment’s central thesis—that police pose
the greatest threat to young black men. I
propose two counter hypotheses: first,
that there is no government agency more
dedicated to the idea that black lives
matter than the police; and second, that
we have been talking obsessively about
alleged police racism over the last 20
years in order to avoid talking about a far
larger problem—black-on-black crime.
Let’s be clear at the outset: police
have an indefeasible obligation to treat
everyone with courtesy and respect, and
to act within the confines of the law. Too
often, officers develop a hardened, obnox

ious attitude. It is also true that being
stopped when you are innocent of any
wrongdoing is infuriating, humiliating,
and sometimes ter

rifying. And needless
to say, every unjusti

of an unarmed civil

in that history, police
shootings of black
men are particularly
and understandably
fraught. That history
informs how many
people view the police.
But however intoler

able and inexcusable
every act of police
brutality is, and while
we need to make sure
that the police are
properly trained in
the Constitution and
in courtesy, there is a
larger reality behind
the issue of policing, crime, and race that
remains a taboo topic. The problem of
black-on-black crime is an uncomfortable
truth, but unless we acknowledge it, we
won’t get very far in understanding pat

terns of policing.

Every year, approximately 6,000
blacks are murdered. This is a number
greater than white and Hispanic homi

cide victims combined, even though
blacks are only 13 percent of the national
population. Blacks are killed at six times
the rate of whites and Hispanics com

bined. In Los Angeles, blacks between
the ages of 20 and 24 die at a rate 20 to 30
times the national mean. Who is killing
them? Not the police, and not white civil

ians, but other blacks. The astronomical
black death-by-homicide rate is a func

tion of the black crime rate. Black males
between the ages of 14 and 17 commit
homicide at ten times the rate of white
and Hispanic male
teens combined. Blacks
of all ages commit
homicide at eight times
the rate of whites and
Hispanics combined,
and at eleven times the
rate of whites alone.
The police could
end all lethal uses
of force tomorrow
and it would have at
most a trivial effect
on the black death-
by-homicide rate.
The nation’s police
killed 987 civilians
in 2015, according to
a database compiled
by
The Washington
Post
. Whites were 50
percent—or 493—of
those victims, and
blacks were 26 per

otherwise threatening the officer with
potentially lethal force.
The black violent crime rate would
actually predict that
more
than 26 per

cent of police victims would be black.
Officer use of force will occur where the
police interact most often with violent
criminals, armed suspects, and those
resisting arrest, and that is in black neigh

borhoods. In America’s 75 largest coun

ties in 2009, for example, blacks consti

tuted 62 percent of all robbery defendants,
57 percent of all murder defendants, 45
percent of all assault defendants—but
only 15 percent of the population.
Moreover, 40 percent of all cop kill

ers have been black over the last decade.
And a larger proportion of white and
Hispanic homicide deaths are a result
of police killings than black homicide
deaths—but don’t expect to hear that
from the media or from the political
enablers of the Black Lives Matter move

ment. Twelve percent of all white and
Hispanic homicide victims are killed
by police officers, compared to four
percent of all black homicide victims.
If we’re going to have a “Lives Matter”
anti-police movement, it would be
more appropriately named “White and
Hispanic Lives Matter.”
Standard anti-cop ideology, whether
emanating from the ACLU or the acad

emy, holds that law enforcement actions
are racist if they don’t mirror popula

tion data. New York City illustrates why
that expectation is so misguided. Blacks
make up 23 percent of New York City’s
population, but they commit 75 percent
of all shootings, 70 percent of all robber

ies, and 66 percent of all violent crime,
according to victims and witnesses. Add
Hispanic shootings and you account for
98 percent of all illegal gunfire in the
city. Whites are 33 percent of the city’s
population, but they commit fewer than
two percent of all shootings, four per

cent of all robberies, and five percent of
all violent crime. These disparities mean
that virtually every time the police
in New York are called out on a gun
run—meaning that someone has just
been shot—they are being summoned
to minority neighborhoods looking for
minority suspects.
Officers hope against hope that they
will receive descriptions of white shoot

ing suspects, but it almost never hap

pens. This incidence of crime means
that innocent black men have a much
higher chance than innocent white men
of being stopped by the police because
they match the description of a suspect.
This is not something the police choose.
It is a reality forced on them by the
facts of crime.
The geographic disparities are also
huge. In Brownsville, Brooklyn, the
per capita shooting rate is 81 times

As a result, police presence and use of
proactive tactics are much higher in
Brownsville than in Bay Ridge. Every
time there is a shooting, the police will
f lood the area looking to make stops
in order to avert a retaliatory shooting.
They are in Brownsville not because of
racism, but because they want to provide
protection to its many law-abiding resi

dents who deserve safety.

Who are some of the victims of
elevated urban crime? On March 11,
2015, as protesters were once again
converging on the Ferguson police head

quarters demanding the resignation of
the entire department, a six-year-old
boy named Marcus Johnson was killed
a few miles away in a St. Louis park, the
victim of a drive-by shooting. No one
protested his killing. Al Sharpton did
not demand a federal investigation. Few
people outside of his immediate com

munity know his name.
Ten children under the age of ten
were killed in Baltimore last year. In
Cleveland, three children five and
younger were killed in September.
A seven-year-old boy was killed in
Chicago over the Fourth of July weekend

November, a nine-year-old in Chicago
was lured into an alley and killed by
his father’s gang enemies; the father
refused to cooperate with the police. In
August, a nine-year-old girl was doing
her homework on her mother’s bed in
Ferguson when a bullet fired into the
house killed her. In Cincinnati in July, a
four-year-old girl was shot in the head
and a six-year-old girl was left paralyzed
and partially blind from two separate
drive-by shootings. This mindless
violence seems almost to be regarded
as normal, given the lack of attention
it receives from the same people who
would be out in droves if any of these
had been police shootings. As horrific
as such stories are, crime rates were
much higher 20 years ago. In New York
City in 1990, for example, there were
2,245 homicides. In 2014 there were
333—a decrease of 85 percent. The drop
in New York’s crime rate is the steepest
in the nation, but crime has fallen at
a historic rate nationwide as well—by
about 40 percent—since the early 1990s.
The greatest beneficiaries of these
declining rates have been minorities.
Over 10,000 minority males alive today
in New York would be dead if the city’s
homicide rate had remained at its early
1990s level.

What is behind this historic crime
drop? A policing revolution that began
in New York and spread nationally, and
that is now being threatened. Starting
in 1994, the top brass of the NYPD
embraced the then-radical idea that the
police can actually prevent crime, not
just respond to it. They started gather

ing and analyzing crime data on a daily
and then hourly basis. They looked
for patterns, and strategized on tactics
to try to quell crime outbreaks as they
were emerging. Equally important, they
held commanders accountable for crime
in their jurisdictions. Department
leaders started meeting weekly with
precinct commanders to grill them on
crime patterns on their watch. These
weekly accountability sessions came to
be known as Compstat. They were
ruthless, high tension affairs. If a com

mander was not fully informed about
every local crime outbreak and ready
with a strategy to combat it, his career
was in jeopardy.
Compstat created a sense of urgency
about fighting crime that has never left
the NYPD. For decades, the rap against
the police was that they ignored crime
in minority neighborhoods. Compstat
keeps New York commanders focused
like a laser beam on where people are
being victimized most, and that is in
minority communities. Compstat spread
nationwide. Departments across the
country now send officers to emerging
crime hot spots to try to interrupt crimi

nal behavior before it happens.
In terms of economic stimulus alone,
no other government program has come
close to the success of data-driven polic

ing. In New York City, businesses that
had shunned previously drug-infested
areas now set up shop there, offering res

idents a choice in shopping and creating
a demand for workers. Senior citizens
felt safe to go to the store or to the post
office to pick up their Social Security
checks. Children could ride their bikes
on city sidewalks without their moth

ers worrying that they would be shot.
But the crime victories of the last two
decades, and the moral support on
which law and order depends, are now
in jeopardy thanks to the falsehoods of
the Black Lives Matter movement.

borhoods now find themselves routinely
surrounded by cursing, jeering crowds
when they make a pedestrian stop or try
to arrest a suspect. Sometimes bottles
and rocks are thrown. Bystanders stick
cell phones in the officers’ faces, dar

ing them to proceed with their duties.
Officers are worried about becoming
the next racist cop of the week and pos

sibly losing their livelihood thanks to an
incomplete cell phone video that inevita

bly fails to show the antecedents to their
use of force. Officer use of force is never
pretty, but the public is clueless about

how hard it is to subdue a suspect who is
determined to resist arrest.
As a result of the anti-cop campaign
of the last two years and the resulting
push-back in the streets, officers in
urban areas are cutting back on precisely
the kind of policing that led to the crime
decline of the 1990s and 2000s. Arrests
and summons are down, particularly
for low-level offenses. Police officers
continue to rush to 911 calls when there
is already a victim. But when it comes
to making discretionary stops—such as
getting out of their cars and question

ing people hanging out on drug corners
at 1:00 a.m.—many cops worry that
doing so could put their careers on the
line. Police officers are, after all, human.
When they are repeatedly called racist
for stopping and questioning suspicious
individuals in high-crime areas, they
will perform less of those stops. That is
not only understandable—in a sense, it
is how things
should
work. Policing is
political. If a powerful political block
has denied the legitimacy of assertive
policing, we will get less of it.
On the other hand, the people
demanding that the police back off are
by no means representative of the entire
black community. Go to any police-
neighborhood meeting in Harlem, the
South Bronx, or South Central Los
Angeles, and you will invariably hear
variants of the following: “We want the
dealers off the corner.” “You arrest them
and they’re back the next day.” “There
are kids hanging out on my stoop. Why
can’t you arrest them for loitering?”
“I smell weed in my hallway. Can’t you
do something?” I met an elderly cancer
amputee in the Mount Hope section of
the Bronx who was terrified to go to her
lobby mailbox because of the young
men trespassing there and selling drugs.
The only time she felt safe was when the
police were there. “Please, Jesus,” she said
to me, “send more police!” The irony is
that the police cannot respond to these
heartfelt requests for order without gen

erating the racially disproportionate sta

tistics that will be used against them in
an ACLU or Justice Department lawsuit.

Unfortunately, when officers back
off in high crime neighborhoods, crime
shoots through the roof. Our country is
in the midst of the first sustained violent
crime spike in two decades. Murders
rose nearly 17 percent in the nation’s 50
largest cities in 2015, and it was in cities
with large black populations where the
violence increased the most. Baltimore’s
per capita homicide rate last year was the
highest in its history. Milwaukee had its
deadliest year in a decade, with a 72 per

cent increase in homicides. Homicides in
Cleveland increased 90 percent over the
previous year. Murders rose 83 percent
in Nashville, 54 percent in Washington,
D.C., and 61 percent in Minneapolis. In
Chicago, where pedestrian stops are
down by 90 percent, shootings were up
80 percent through March 2016.

The Lost Eastern Christian Empire

Western Christian orthodoxy, in which American culture is rooted, came out of the dispute with the eastern Christian Church. There was a time when Christianity was the predominant faith throughout what is now known as the Middle East and it reached all the way to modern China. The eastern Christian empire, however, did not hold to the same beliefs as the western one. Today, except for a few pockets of Christians in what is now an Islamic dominated region, Christianity in that area has all but disappeared. The eastern Christian empire and their different understanding of the nature of Christ are vital, not only to the story of Christianity, but to the understanding of American culture and reasonable expectations concerning the future of our nation given its present political course.

To better understand the chain of events that led to the growth, schism, and ultimate destruction of the eastern Christian empire one should start in the first century, before the transition from the apostolic era to the early church fathers. After Pentecost, religious persecution by the Jews caused the apostles to scatter to the known world, spreading Christianity in their wake. During the second century AD, Christianity continued to grow in all the regions of the Roman world, but, without apostolic direction to set the course for orthodoxy, disputes rose. Many of these disputes centered on the nature of Christ’s humanity and divinity. By the fifth century AD, the main dispute between eastern and western branches of Christianity ranged from Christ having two separate wills to His having only one divine will, with modern western orthodoxy laying somewhere in between these two positions.

Eastern Christianity had a cultural edge over its western counterpart. Christianity had originated in Palestine, or modern day Israel, which lay in the eastern portion of the church; much of the New Testament was written in Greek, which remained prevalent in the eastern churches as compared to the western churches; and three out of the five jurisdictions of the patriarchs, by the fifth century, were located in the East. “Christianity had five great patriarchates, and only one, Rome, was to be found in Europe. Of the others, Alexandria stood on the African continent, and three (Constantinople, Antioch, and Jerusalem) were in Asia.”[1]

Consequently, even the Papacy had a strong Eastern influence to it.

The papacy was as thoroughly Eastern in language and culture as anywhere in Asia Minor, with the dominance of Greek (which was by now known as the “Roman” language) and Syriac. Between 640 and 740, no fewer than six popes derived from Syria, in addition to several Greek natives.[2]

Eastern Christianity even produced influential theologians.

This ‘Church of the East,’ as it came to be known … had produced some very gifted leaders, teachers, and spiritual thinkers. They included not only such earlier figures as Barsumas and Narsai but also the theologian Babai the Great (d. 628), who composed a work on the union of the divinity and humanity in Christ, and a clutch of monastic writers whose works proved of enduring attraction, such as Sahdona (fl. Mid-seventh century) and Isaac of Nineveh (d. ca. 700).[3]

Eastern Christianity was so entrenched that even after the fall of the Roman Empire it retained its Eastern traditions. “After the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, Christianity maintained its cultural and intellectual traditions in the Eastern empire, in Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt.”[4] In comparison, the fledgling western Christian empire provided no signs that its theological understanding of Christ’s nature would grow to be the most dominant and widely accepted one.

The church, leading up to the fifth century, was by no means monolithic or unified, not even among individuals within regions, but it was not until Nestorius came along that the eastern and western branches of Christianity started to solidify their differences. Unwittingly, Nestorius exposed the dichotomy of a church divided by two different languages, traditions, and understandings of the nature of Christ, which brought about one of the biggest church rifts that has lasted to modern times.

Nestorius, for whom Nestorianism is named, became the bishop of Constantinople in 428. In that same year, on the twenty-second of November, one of his bishops, Anastasius, gave a sermon in which he objected to the term “Theotokos” (“God-bearer”) as a title for Mary, the mother of Jesus. Nestorius’s defense of Anastasius started a firestorm of controversy that culminated in the Council of Ephesus (431) and ultimately the Council of Chalcedon (451). “Nestorius held that Mary could appropriately be called “Mother of Christ” (Christotokos), but not “Mother of God,” [(Theotokos)] since, he argued, this would imply that the divine nature of Christ had a birth and therefore a beginning.”[5]

Nestorius’s opponents, however, saw his reluctance to use Theotokos as a sign that he was denying the divinity of Christ and instead they thought he held that Christ was a mere man who was adopted by God as His son. In Nestorius’s defense, it seems he:

[A]ttempted to preserve the full humanity of Christ and at the same time preserve the immutability of the divine nature of Christ, by emphasizing the distinction between the two natures over against the unity of natures … Thus, like the Arians, he apparently rejected any kind of unity other than the unity of wills.[6]

Ostensibly, Nestorius believed there was a division between Christ’s humanity and His divinity in which His divinity was bestowed upon Him after His birth, whereas his opponents believed in a unity between the two natures of Christ that were circumscribed in the womb. “The Council of Ephesus (431), [called to settle the Nestorian dispute] condemned “Nestorianism” as a heresy, but they may have attributed ideas to Nestorius that he did not hold.”[7]

To be clear about the distinction between Nestorius and Nestorianism, Nestorius held that, “The two natures are not only distinct, they are separate. … Later Nestorians [followers of Nestorius] pushed the separation of the natures to the point where it sounded like they were talking about two separate ‘persons’.”[8] The councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon, on the other hand, held, “The two natures are distinct, but not separate. … The two natures are unified, but not confused.”[9]

These two distinctions, two separate natures or one unified nature, is important for its salvific implications. According to the western orthodox view, in order for Christ to be able to atone for the sins of mankind, He would need to be both human and divine without separation. Otherwise, according to this reasoning, His death would not be sufficient to satisfy God’s justice for the disobedience of mankind.

The Nestorian controversy also gave birth to an understanding of Christ’s nature that occupies the other end of the nature of Christ spectrum called Monophysitism. Monophysitism is a belief that Christ only had one nature without union. Eutyches, an abbot of a Constantinople monastery, started Monophysitism by overreacting to Nestorius and, instead, proposed “a Christology in which the divine nature completely absorbed the human nature, leaving no human nature after the incarnation.”[10]

Monophysitism became both an ecclesiastical and political problem, because it gained and maintained popularity. Its popularity not only divided the church, it divided the Roman empire and threaten the empire’s stability. It was very popular in the eastern portion of the eastern Christian empire, especially in Egypt and Syria where the knowledge of the New Testament Greek was still prevalent. “In Egypt and Syria [around the ecumenical council of Chalcedon in 451], Monophysites were so commonplace that they were known simply as Egyptians (Copts) and Syrians (Suriani), respectively.” [11]

Although the Council of Chalcedon condemned both Nestorianism and Monophysitism, these two beliefs continued to flourish. As the western church consolidated its authority within the western empire, dissenters from the state sponsored view of Christ’s nature had to move farther east to escape the persecuting grasp of the state sponsored church.

As the church-state alliance became ever more firmly entrenched in Rome and Constantinople, so evermore Christian believers were forced to flee beyond the frontier, especially into those weakly controlled borderlands that became such fertile territory for religious innovation and interaction. The number and importance of such religious dissidents grew steadily with the fifth-century splits over the relationship between Christ’s human and divine natures. Monophysite teachings dominated in Syria and Egypt, and also prevailed in the Christian states of Armenia and Ethiopia.[12]

As both Monophysitism and Nestorianism proliferated over the eastern Christian empire, the stage was set for further expansion of Nestorianism to the east. The capitol of the eastern Christian empire was Seleucia, a city on the Tigris River very close to modern day Baghdad, which was also a center for trade and communication and hence it was well positioned to spread Christianity outside of its borders. “Seleucia stood at the center of the world’s routes of trade and communication, equally placed between the civilizations that looked respectively to the Atlantic and Pacific.”[13] Significantly, the hub of communication and trade in Asia, after the Council of Ephesus, which was also the most populous city in the world at that time, followed the teachings of Nestorius, and spread that understanding of Christianity further east. “Within the Persian Empire, the main Christian church was based in the twin cities of Seleucia-Ctesiphon, the imperial capital that was the successor to ancient Babylon, and the most populous city in the world at that time. This church followed the teachings of Nestorius after 431.”[14]

At the same time the teachings of Nestorius was growing in the east, the western portion of the eastern Christian empire was solidifying around Monophysitism through the efforts of Jacobus Baradaeus, the bishop of Eddessa, (modern day city of Şanlıurfa, located in Turkey close to the Syrian border approximately half way between the Mediterranean and Syria’s modern border with Iraq). “In the sixth century, Asian Monophysites also developed their own church apparatus, through the organizing ability of Jacobus Baradaeus. From his base in Edessa, Jacobus created a whole clandestine church, in which he ordained two patriarchs and eighty-nine bishops.”[15] Jacobus’s underground parallel church became known as the Jacobites, which is now the modern Syrian Orthodox Church.[16]

Jacobus’s underground church reached past the borders of sixth-century Syria into Asia Minor, modern day Turkey, and the islands of the Aegean Sea to the west of Turkey. “Despite strong opposition from Chalcedonians, the charismatic Syrian leader Jacob Baradaeus (ca. 500-578) had already begun to engage in a highly successful program of clandestine expansion that extended a thriving ‘Monophysite’ church not only within Syria but in large areas of Asia Minor and Aegean.”[17]

Interestingly, Monophysitism expanded in the region just south of Chalcedon, the city where it had been condemned. One of the reasons for the expansion of the Monophysite church and the actions of Jacobus were the consolidation efforts of the Roman Emperor Justinian (527-565). In attempt to unify power and stability within his realm, Justinian coercively tried to bring the Monophysites in line with the findings of the Counsel of Chalcedon.

Jacob saw Justinian’s policies as threatening the integrity of the anti-Chalcedonian tradition, and he labored not only to spread the faith among potential converts but also to win over existing Christians to a single-nature position. … The consequences of Jacob’s industry were remarkable, and the non-Chalcedonian Syrian believers, who broke with the patriarchate in Antioch and came to have an Episcopal succession of their own, began to be described as the Jacobites in honor of his influence.[18]

In spite of Justinian’s efforts, Monophysitism did not, however, remain localized in Asia Minor or the Aegean, it also grew along the Nile River.

In the Nile Valley, heading toward northern Sudan, the kingdom of Nubia was evangelized by mainly “Monophysite” missionaries in the 540s, and within a generation of the three Nubian territories of Nobatia Makuria, and Alodia were officially Christian, following the conversion of the their rulers. In Nobatia at least, and probably more widely, the theology adopted was “Monophysite.”[19]

Monophysitism extended as far South as Ethiopia, “In Ethiopia, where the kingdom of Aksum became an important Christian territory in the first half of the sixth century under King Kaleb, there were strong historical links both with the Coptic Church and with Syria, and there was also a marked predominance of ‘Monophysite’ conviction.”[20]

In its expansion, Justinian was not the only obstacle with which the Monophysites had to contend. Monophysitism “encountered its most able intellectual opponent in the gifted Byzantine monk, theologian, and ascetic writer, Maximus “the Confessor” (ca. 580-662).”[21] Maximus’s arguments explaining the reason for Christ’s two natures were very convincing and difficult for Monophysites to logically refute.

In a remarkably creative fashion, Maximus was able to underscore the authenticity of Jesus’s humanity, with its real choices and temptations, while also asserting that his human nature existed as it did precisely because it was the humanity of the Son of God. In becoming incarnate, the Word became all that humans are, yet he did so in his own unique way as a divine person, and thus it was that his human willing, while utterly genuine, was consonant with the will of God. Maximus thought that such a conception facilitated a vision of salvation as a mystical union between God and creation in which the integrity of the human is fully respected. To be saved is to be “divinized,” and such a union with God, so far from being an obliteration of the dignity of created beings, is in fact the realization of reactions true destiny.”[22]

Regrettably, Maximus was martyred for his Dyothelite views by the Roman emperor who was attempting to maintain unity in the Roman Empire by eliminating those who held views different from the region over which he was trying to maintain control. It was only later on that his understanding of Christ’s nature became politically useful and therefore acceptable to the Roman emperor.

The Dyothelite position that Maximus had championed finally prevailed at another council held in Constantinople in 680-681, the third in the city and the sixth of the general councils. The gathering took place at the behest of the emperor Constantine IV Pogonatus, who was convinced that the Monothelite stance was no longer very useful politically, as a large proportion of ‘Monophysitie’ were to be found in areas that had in any case fallen to Arab control from the late 630s onward and looked as if they would remain that way.[23]

As mentioned above, in the seventh century, the Islamic Arabs started to consolidate political control of the eastern portion of the Christian empire, which altered political considerations in the West that led to acceptance of theological positions that were previously unacceptable. At that time, in the world of theology, the geographic lines between Monophysitism, Nestorianism, and western orthodoxy were, for the most part, defined and established. “By the time of the Arab conquests in the seventh century, the Jacobites probably held the loyalty of most Christians in greater Syria, while the Nestsorians [modern day Assyrian Church of the East] dominated the eastern lands, in what we now called Iraq and Iran. The West Syrian church was Jacobite; East Syrians were Nestorian.”[24]

During the seventh century, the Monophysite and Nestorian Christian empire reached its zenith, and their forms of Christianity seemed to thrive under political masters who were adverse to its tenants. While Nestorian Christianity appeared poised to take over the world as the dominant Christian understanding of Christ’s nature, it had actually reached the point of diminishing returns and its efforts in the future would shift to survival instead of expansion. Additionally, by the end of the seventh century,

[T]here was plainly very little prospect of reconciling the friends and foes of Chalcedon. … [T]he orthodoxy of the main Byzantine church, headed up by the four patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem, which remained in communication with the churches of the West. All of these believers adhered to Chalcedon and officially to the further qualifications of its emphases as specified at Constantinople in 553 and 680-681.

The other … orthodoxy was the position of a smaller but still very significant body of dissenters: the Armenians, the Copts, the Ethiopians, and a large number of Syrians [Monophysites]. They repudiated altogether the language of “in two natures” as violating the uniqueness of the incarnate word. …

Alongside both of these groups there was also, still farther to the east and the south but with a presence in other quarters as well, a significant constituency wedded to yet another position [Nestorianism].[25]

Such was the state of the Christian world when Bishop Timothy I of Seleucia reigned. “About 780, … Timothy became patriarch, or catholicos, of the [Nestorian] Church of the East, which was then based at the ancient Mesoptamian city of Seleucia.”[26] Timothy’s reign is significant because he oversaw the church in the East at its height, during a golden age of Christianity in the East.

Timothy himself presided over nineteen metropolitans [the head of an ecclesiastical province] and eighty-five bishops … Just in Timothy’s lifetime, new metropolitan sees were created at Rai near Tehran, and in Syria, Turkestan, Armenia, and Dailumaye on the Caspian Sea.[27]

The magnitude of the eastern Christian empire can be seen in the contrast between the metropolitans that Timothy presided over and those in England at that same time. “In England to give a comparison, the medieval church had two metropolitans: respectively, at York and Canterbury.” [28] The eastern Christian empire was so expansive and so well entrenched that even under Muslim rule it remained rather large leading up to the tenth century. “By the tenth century, the Byzantine Empire still had fifty-one metropolitans, supervising a hierarchy of 515 bishops, and of these, thirty-two metropolitans and 373 bishops were still to be found in Asia Minor.”[29]

Over time, the Islamic rulers in Asia Minor, the Middle East, and other portions of Asia restricted the spread of Christianity through rules, regulations, and persecution. In addition to non-Muslims having to pay a special tax, they were also excluded from other economic activities and restricted in their evangelization efforts. Although, persecution was not consistently present, it was effective when used and it was most severe when external threats, such as western Christianity, appeared to menace the Islamic state. “The severity of persecution or enforcement varied over time but was at its worst when an established religion faced a real or perceived danger to its own existence.”[30] For this reason, the western Christian empire was detrimental to the existence of the eastern one. For all of these reasons, eastern Christianity started to erode over several centuries to the point where it is now virtually non-existent in Islamic dominated countries.

Looking back over the history of the church, and by analyzing the schism between the eastern and western branches of Christianity, one can observe how western orthodox Christianity was defined by the disputes with its eastern brethren. One can also witness the fate of any system of faith that does not maintain favor of those in political power.

It is obvious, not only from observing Christian understandings in the past, but also the diversity of denominations in modern times, that Christianity is not, and never has been, a unified belief system. Nearly every forthright person struggles to understand truth, but each of us understands truth based on presuppositions that may or may not be correct. Error in human thinking, therefore, should always be the first presupposition in any epistemological pursuit. It is for this reason disagreement among believers can be helpful, but it also can be divisive and destructive.

Disagreement causes people to justify their position and think through why they believe what they believe. For example, without the Nestorian and Monophysite controversies, the Councils of Ephesus (431) and Chalcedon (451) most likely would not have happened. Both of these councils were integral for working out what we now know as the Nicene Creed, which has been foundational to western Christian orthodoxy as a statement of faith.

Additionally, without the Monophysite controversy, Maximus the Confessor may not have been inspired to work out the logical reasons for the unification of Christ’s humanity and divinity, which has also played a major role in western orthodoxy, salvation, and our understanding of the relationship to the Trinity.

Theological disputes can also be destructive when one side resorts to using un-Christian methods to suppress opposition to their perspective, such as the use of state sponsored power. The use of state power is destructive not only for the obvious harm it does to the persecuted, but also for the harm it does to the truth of Christianity in the minds of contemporary and historical observers. Using coercive state power to put down Christian opposition to one’s Christian perspective goes against the overall teachings of Scripture, namely love thy neighbor.[31] Yet, it is interesting to note that western orthodoxy has been passed down to us by these and other non-Biblically sanctioned means.

Given what happened to the Eastern Christian Empire after Islam took over the government in their region, it would be difficult to conclude that any system of faith can survive, over a long period of time, when faced with a hostile state-sponsored political climate. A belief system must either win over the hostile political system, like in the case of Constantine I, or face restrictions to their growth and persecution that ultimately leads to near non-existence over time.

Perhaps the reason the eastern Christian empire did not endure to the present is because, in the sovereignty of God, by dismantling the eastern Christian empire, He all but eradicated an inaccurate perception of Christ’s nature. If this is true, it does not necessarily mean that western orthodoxy, as we now understand it, is the all encompassing correct understanding of Christ’s nature and of salvation. It could be a stepping stone on the road to the correct understanding of these topics.

Each individual believer is a living stone being progressively placed over time to build a spiritual house.[31] Nations will rise and fall, but the spiritual house will continue towards its completion. With this view of history, it is possible the same fate awaits the church in the West as that of the eastern Christian empire, especially since the western churches grew from support of the state and are now facing hostile secular political environments.

[My memory is telling me that The Nicene Creed came from the Council of Niceae, about 190 AD. The five bishops, as enumerated in Matt’s article, included one Hereticus, from whence comes the word Heresy. Hereticus and the other four decided that there was too much floating around about the Christ, so they banned and destroyed about 60% of it. Thus, the recently discovered Gospels of Judas and of Mary have not been, as far as I know, authenticated by the Vatican. These two fall into what Matt is writing.

Thanks for dropping a line. I have been busy with school, so I have not written as much as I would like. I have some things I want to research, but I will have to wait until I get my school work out of the way. Other than that, I have been doing very well, thank you for asking.

The First Council of Nicaea took place in AD 325. Prior to that time, Christianity was struggling to survive in a hostile political climate. It was not until Emperor Constantine came to the thrown that the Church was able to convene ecumenical councils.

The Nicene Creed was initiated in that first council, but it was not completed, as we know it today, until after the councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon.

Scripture is self-authenticating, it does not derive its authority from humans or any human institution. If it did, no one should take it seriously or uphold anything it had to say, because all of humanity is powerless, flawed, and too frequently wrong.

The ecumenical councils, with respect to the canon of Scripture, only affirmed what most Christians already knew, i.e., what was scriptural and what was not. They used four basic criteria for logically coming to their conclusion about the canon of Scripture: 1. apostolic authority, 2. widespread acceptance, 3. consistency with the Hebrew canon, and 4. self-attesting authentication. The Apocrypha, including the extra books in the Douay-Rheims Bible confirmed by the Council of Trent between 1545 and 1563, does not meet one or all the above criteria.

Too often, people confuse canonization with recognition. What is difficult for many people to understand is that Scripture was canonical from the time it was first written no matter how long it took humans to recognize its authority.

Origin:On 13 December 2015, the web site Allen West Republic published an article about the swearing in of Judge Carolyn Walker-Diallo, titled “Obama’s America: Muslim Woman Sworn in As Judge, Look at the FIRST Thing She Does!”:

New York Judge Carolyn Walker-Diallo, a Black Muslim woman took oath as a civil court judge in New York on Thursday, while swearing to abide by the U.S. Constitution placing her hand on the Holy Quran.

The article’s primary assertion was that the “first thing” Walker-Diallo did upon becoming a judge was to was place her hand upon the Quran, although technically she didn’t become a judge until the swearing-in was complete. (Judges are sworn in using a Bible, religious text of their choice, or a copy of the U.S. Constitution.)

A similar controversy erupted regarding Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison’s use of a Quran in 2006. At that time, UCLA law professor and legal analyst Eugene Volokh responded to a CNN panel question about whether the use of religious texts other than the Bible was addressed in extant law, explaining (in a response that has nothing to do with President Obama):

Well [the Constitution] actually does say a couple of things. First, it doesn’t even require congressman to use any religious text or any religious component. It specifically provides that they may affirm, rather than swearing. That was for the benefit of people who have a religious objection to invoking God in an oath.

Quakers were a traditional example. And for example, President Herbert Hoover was sworn in without putting his hand on any book.

It also says no religious text shall be used for government office. And when you’re required to swear on the book of a religion that is different from you, not traditionally you’ve done it, that would be an impermissible religious test.

As for the claim’s veracity, New York State Senator Martin Malave Dilan published the following status update to Facebook on 11 December 2015:

Multiple news sources reported that Walker-Diallo used a Quran as her religious text of choice for her swearing-in (noting the controversy it engendered), and the event was captured on video:

A New York City judge is facing a backlash after taking her oath using the holy book of Islam in recognition of her Muslim faith. Carolyn Walker-Diallo was elected in Brooklyn’s 7th Municipal District and took her oath of office last week using the Quran.

After attenders posted a video of the swearing-in session to social media, conservatives unleashed a storm on insults toward the public servant. “Sickening,” one Facebook user posted in response to the video. “Is this America or the Middle East.” “Another piece of s— Muslim,” another user wrote, “trying to take over this country.”

[Conservatives unleashed? Based on what? Muslims are, by explicit chapters in the Qu’Ran, see posted verses elsewhere on this blog, to place Islam and Sharia law above all others, meaning above the US Constitution and the NYS Constitution. This is Hajiri at its finest!
